ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

ARDS Aboriginal Corporation has been working with Yolŋu communities in Northeast Arnhem Land for 50 years. We are led by Senior Yolŋu. Our vision is for Yolŋu to engage with the Balanda world as equals. We try to help Yolŋu to be strong in Yolŋu culture, and strong in understanding Balanda culture. We learn from each other and try to work in Yolŋu ways. We do this work across language, law and justice, community development, radio and media, and cultural competency training.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Contribute to day to day project planning alongside Yolŋu and Balanda language workers
  • Help develop long-term plans for maintaining, revitalising and celebrating languages in the region alongside key Yolŋu
  • Support language resource development
  • Train and mentor language workers
  • Darwin based but regular travel to Northeast Arnhem communities.

This role can be based in a Yolŋu remote community if housing is available, please speak with us if you are interested in this.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Knowledge of principles of translation, sociolinguistics and cross cultural communication
  • Knowledge of Yolŋu languages, or at least willingness to learn
  • Experience working in multilingual environments
  • Experience working respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal people
  • Experience facilitating projects including project co-design, file and data management and managing reporting requirements.
  • IT and technical skills including MS office and linguistics software
  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant fields are preferred but not required if you have the right experience!
