The Australian Nursing Federation Industrial Union of Workers Perth (ANMF WA) has been advocating for nurses, midwives and their patients for more than 100 years. Our purpose is to use our collective advocacy power to advance working conditions, member wellbeing, and a safer, more equitable health system for the community that depends on us.

The union is looking for an experienced communications professional to deliver communications and media activity that strengthens trust, builds credibility, and supports the strategic objectives of the ANMF WA.

In this role, you will play a leading role in our strategic communications and media relations activities, providing expert advice, managing media engagement, developing high-quality content, and protecting organisational reputation.

You’ll lead a small team and be a collaborative and confident communicator with sound judgement, capable of managing complex and sensitive issues while working closely with your colleagues across the organisation to achieve shared goals

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and strategy

  • Lead the development and delivery of communications and media relations strategies that support the ANMF WA’s strategic goals and enhance its reputation and visibility
  • Provide strategic communications advice to senior leaders on relevant issues
  • Ensure all communications are consistent, accurate and aligned to ANMF WA’s strategic plan.
  • Monitor emerging issues and risks, coordinating cross-team responses and supporting issues and crisis management
  • Oversee media monitoring, insights, analysis and reporting to inform decision-making and measure impact
  • Manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

Media relations

  • Coordinate proactive media activity, including campaigns, story pitches, spokesperson preparation and broader public relations initiatives
  • Manage communications for major announcements, events and union initiatives
  • Oversee all media enquiries, ensuring responses are timely, accurate and strategically aligned.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including key media outlets and journalists

Content and engagement

  • Lead the creation of high-quality communications materials, including media releases, briefing notes, member newsletters, key messages, magazines, social media posts and speaking points
  • Support communications and engagement activities that strengthen trust, build credibility and promote the ANMF WA brand

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Significant experience leading strategic communications projects, including planning, delivery, evaluation and performance reporting.
  • Highly developed writing and storytelling capability, with an understanding of how to tailor messages for different audiences.
  • Experience managing complex or sensitive projects and leading teams to deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative solutions aligned to strategy.
  • A collaborative leadership style, with proven experience motivating and mentoring others, and helping them grow.
  • Excellent initiative and a proactive, task-oriented approach, working with urgency while also demonstrating sound judgement and professional maturity.
  • An enthusiastic and respectful attitude, working as a team player to build partnerships and work collaboratively to achieve shared objectives.
  • The ability to operate effectively in uncertain or dynamic environments.

Additional desirable skills include:

  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience building trusted relationships with senior leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline – such as Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Business – or equivalent business experience
  • Experience in campaigning, advocacy and/or community or member engagement, with the ability to translate complex policy into clear and compelling communications
  • Experience in news media, and knowledge of the current media landscape in WA.
  • Experience working with unions and/or memberbased organisations.
