The AMWU represents members in a wide range of manufacturing industries including food and confectionery; metal and engineering; printing, design, and packaging; technical, supervisory, and administrative; and vehicle building, service and repair.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about health and safety and is wanting to help improve the experiences and recruitment of Health and Safety Representatives across Victoria’s manufacturing workplaces.

The Project Officer will be responsible for ensuring the effective management and delivery of a project designed to strengthen support systems for Health and Safety Representatives. Funded by WorkSafe, the project focuses on recruiting more Health and Safety Representatives, creating sustainable networks, and understanding the barriers faced by Health and Safety Representatives in workplaces across Victoria’s manufacturing industry.

Consistent with AMWU values, the successful candidate must have a genuine interest in and positive attitude to improving OHS for AMWU members and be committed to work within a team environment to achieve better outcomes for workers.

A genuine commitment to Trade Unionism is essential.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing project deliverables designed to recruit Health and Safety Representatives and improve their experiences representing workers on OHS issues in manufacturing.
  • Working collaboratively with AMWU officials, workers, and employers to deliver positive OHS improvements.
  • Provide regular reports to the project tripartite steering committee, AMWU governance committees and WorkSafe Victoria
  • Establish relationships with Health and Safety Representatives in manufacturing. Skill & Knowledge:
  • Occupational Health and Safety - An appreciation of OHS hazards & their consequences for our manufacturing industry members.
  • An understanding of OHS laws and the importance of the role of Health and Safety Representatives in preventing workplace injury and illness.
  • Written Communication - prepare project monitoring reports for the Steering committee and Worksafe, project communications and resources in conjunction with appropriate subject matter experts.
  • Verbal Communication - builds effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders to enable project deliverables to be completed in a timely manner.
  • Organisation and time management skills - The project is outcome driven so the successful person needs to be able to establish milestones & ensure delivery in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build and sustain positive working relationships with AMWU members and project stakeholders.
  • Computer skills– a working knowledge of word, excel, Zoom/MS Teams, Outlook, and PowerPoint programs.
  • Problem solving – demonstrated problem solving skills and initiative.
  • Driver’s License – there will be regional travel, some overnights, plus WorkSafe meetings in Geelong.

Desirable

  • Experience / Qualifications in OHS
  • Experience as a Health and Safety Representative
  • Experience working in manufacturing.
