AMSANT is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in the Northern Territory and advocates for equity in health, focusing on supporting the provision of high quality comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal communities.

Role Description

The purpose of the Public Health Registrar is to provide public health expertise to the public health unit within AMSANT across a range of areas including policy, advocacy and research, public health and clinical leadership and clinical system development. 

The position will undertake 1-2 major projects in areas of policy, advocacy, public health and primary health care development that meet the learning needs of the registrar and that are also of high priority to AMSANT.  Previous examples have included a needs analysis focusing on access to antenatal care and development and initial analysis of a pooled clinical data set for use in policy and advocacy within AMSANT. The position will also contribute to the day to day work of the Public Health Unit through providing timely advice on policy, advocacy and research issues to the CEO and the board. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to clinical system development within ACCHSs and across the Aboriginal Primary Health Care (PHC) system in the NT.
• Provide public health support to member services with a focus on the current COVID pandemic.
• Contribute to public health policy and advocacy work as a member of the Public Health Advisory Group.
• Undertake 1- 2 major projects in a research /policy/primary health care development that advances the interests of the community controlled sector in the NT and potentially at the national level.
• Review research proposals according to the AMSANT research policy for their potential to contribute to Aboriginal PHC capacity and improvement in health outcomes.
• Provide advice and support to senior clinicians in the sector on public health /primary health care system issues. 
• Contribute as an active member of the AMSANT Public Health team.
• Attend all staff and team meetings as required by AMSANT.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

1. Eligible for medical registration in the NT.
2. Currently enrolled or eligible to enrol in the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine training scheme.
3. Proven verbal and written communication skills suited to a cross-cultural environment and communication with government and other non-government organisations.
4. An interest in developing public health skills and competencies related to Aboriginal primary health care .
5. Capacity to work in an Aboriginal community controlled organisation including an ability to take direction from Aboriginal management and to work co-operatively in a cross-cultural environment.
6. Capacity to undertake remote travel. 

Desirable:

1. Clinical and /or public health experience in Aboriginal primary health care.

Appointment Factors: (Appointment is subject to)

• Willingness to undergo a Police Check
• Ability to obtain a Working with Children’s Clearance
• Current Driver’s Licence
