This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join our global movement and drive impact in human rights outcomes by leading our Media function. The role is responsible for the innovative development, implementation and evaluation of integrated media plans to progress campaign outcomes that deliver human rights wins. A unique blend of proactive media campaigning, strategy, and response and crisis management will ensure your work is varied, stimulating and rewarding.

This role is ideally suited to a media and communications professional with experience in crisis response work in a national or international media environment, who is keen to use their skills within a values-based not-for-profit organisation. The salary for this position is $111,293 - $119,421 per annum plus 10.5% super and not-for-profit salary packaging.

This role is responsible for:

  • Leading the development and effective implementation of media strategies across all media formats to target decision makers and influence public opinion in order to achieve Amnesty’s human rights goals in Australia and globally
  • Providing specialist expertise and advice on use of media to target decision makers across a range of human rights issues
  • Monitoring internal and external environment and providing expert advice to ensure reputational risks are identified and mitigated
  • Working in collaboration with global counterparts to coordinate AI Australia’s media function and maximise media exposure
  • Ensuring AI Australia's media activities and products reflect the organisation's commitment to rights-holders, respecting lived experience and in line with organisational values
  • Developing and maintaining robust and productive relationships with media contacts to maximise AI Australia’s influence on key decision makers and the public
  • Providing media training and support to AI Australia’s spokespeople to ensure they are confident in representing the organisation
  • Leading the media team (including one direct report and interns and volunteers from time to time), including strategy development, planning and budgeting

You will have:

  • High level communication & interpersonal skills including the ability to critically analyse and articulate complex issues
  • Proven ability to develop, implement and evaluate focused and strategic media campaigns to achieve concrete and measurable outcomes
  • Experience in issues and crisis response work in a national or international media environment
  • Highly developed negotiation skills with proven ability to develop and maintain high quality relationships with media
  • Sophisticated and highly developed knowledge and understanding of the Australian political and media environment
  • Ability to facilitate, empower and enable the active participation of rights holders and supporters in the work of AI Australia
  • Strong cultural competency and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other culturally and linguistically diverse individuals and groups to advance human rights
  • Familiarity with human rights issues and social change methods and tactics, including experience of mass mobilisation, activism and organising techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in or commitment to working with rights holders

Selection Criteria

  • High-level experience developing and implementing successful issues-based media strategies, both planned and reactive
  • Experience in developing strategic, long-term plans to improve and protect organisational reputation and profile, including crisis management
  • Extensive experience in providing high-level strategic media and comms advice to teams and senior leaders
  • Highly developed skills in creating effective and engaging media assets for a range of formats and outlets
  • Strong people leadership and team management skills
  • Sophisticated understanding of human rights issues in Australia and globally, alongside detailed knowledge of Australian political and media landscape
