Senior Great Barrier Reef Campaigner

Australian Marine Conservation Society

The Australian Marine Conservation Society is the voice for Australia's oceans. We are an independent not-for-profit charity. We deal with the big issues concerning the sea, working with the community to protect our marine wildlife, tackling major threats to our oceans and creating marine sanctuaries, places in the sea where sea life is safe from harm. Across our campaigns, we tackle climate change - the biggest existential threat to our ocean planet, with our Great Barrier Reef at the forefront. We are a committed group of professional and passionate scientists, educators and advocates who have defended Australia's oceans since 1965. Check out this short video highlighting some of the key impacts we’ve achieved for our oceans.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Great Barrier Reef is under huge pressure from the threat of climate change, experiencing five mass coral bleaching events in the past 8 years. Rapidly heating waters as a result of climate change are the single biggest threat to the future of the Reef. We’re seeking an experienced campaigner and collaborative leader to drive and build regional Queensland community support for action on climate and Reef protection, and help secure wins for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Senior Great Barrier Reef Campaigner plays a pivotal role in AMCS’ Fight For Our Reef campaign. This position is central to driving efforts aimed at securing significant conservation victories for the Great Barrier Reef, focusing on both leadership within the campaign and overseeing community campaign initiatives in regional Queensland. This role involves:

  • Leading the AMCS community organising and communications (climate/world heritage) campaign to protect the Great Barrier Reef, overseeing the Community Campaigner based in Cairns.

  • Ensuring the Reef tourism industry, especially in the Whitsundays and Cairns, remains aware and is actively involved in climate change initiatives, including the supervision of any on-ground organisers.

  • Promoting a compelling narrative on the need for Reef protection and the opportunities it provides as well as representing AMCS in the media and public forums.

  • Supporting political, policy and legislation work, in conjunction with the Great Barrier Reef Campaign Manager.

Please see the attached for a full position description and further details on the role including the selection criteria.  For more information on AMCS’ Fight for Our Reef campaign see here.
