The Department

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) is responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a mental illness residing in the Inner Southeastern area of Melbourne.

The HOPE (Hospital Outreach Post-Suicidal Engagement) initiative has been set up and funded to provide tailored, holistic support to people experiencing suicidal thoughts or post a suicide attempt. The program aim is to support the person and their carers and families to identify and build the protective factors that reduce the risk of suicide and/or repeated intentional self-harm.

The Role

As a member of the HOPE team, you will use your skills and lived experience of your own suicidal crisis or suicide attempt, to support consumer engagement alongside members of the multidisciplinary team by enhancing the consumer’s own sense of agency and encouraging their sense of hope and personal value.

About You

You will draw from your own lived experience of having a significant mental health challenge and the ability to use your experience to inspire hope and belief in recovery.

Essential

  • A personal lived experience of mental health challenges, which may include suicidal crises.
  • Have recovered from suicidal crisis and have been successfully navigating life stressors for 12-24 months
  • Demonstrated experience working in a peer work role (typically 12 months or more).
  • Demonstrated understanding of consumer peer work and recovery-oriented practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within peer scope of practice.
  • Australian working rights and current influenza vaccination
  • Current drivers licence
  • Be willing to complete a police check and hold a satisfactory Working with Children Check

Desirable

  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work.
  • Intentional Peer Support Training
