We are a community led independent agency that has provided legal and advocacy services for the Great Southern community since 1995.

Our Vision is a just, fair and supportive community empowered through equitable access to legal rights for individuals and communities in the Great Southern region.

Our Mission is to provide quality legal, advocacy and education services to assist disadvantaged community members in our region.

We do this in a number of ways. We provide legal information and advice, undertake negotiation, court representation and conduct community legal education sessions. We engage in advocacy to address systemic justice issues within our community. We work with other partner agencies in the local community to break down barriers that prevent access to justice in the Great Southern region.

about the opportunity

We are seeking applications from passionate lawyers for a role between 28 and 38 hours per week.

As a Community Lawyer with our centre, you will:

  • Provide legal advice to clients in Albany and at outreach locations through the region on a regular basis.
  • Contribute to our duty lawyer programs in the Albany Courthouse.
  • Develop and deliver community education on a range of common legal topics.
  • Participate in law reform and systemic advocacy work where issues are of relevance to our community.
  • Work in partnership with ACLC colleagues and our social and health sector partners to deliver services in a client-centred and trauma-informed manner.

Our team of Community Lawyers work across a range of legal areas. Knowledge of the following areas of law will be beneficial:

  • Family Law
  • Family Violence
  • Protection & Care
  • Tenancy and Homelessness
  • Estate matters
  • Criminal Injuries Compensation
  • Credit & Debt

key selection criteria

Demonstrated Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience working with people experiencing vulnerability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in use of business IT systems, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Sound judgment and ability to work under pressure.
  • Time management and organisation skills (including multi-tasking).
  • Capacity to work in and support a cohesive team environment.
  • A current Driver’s License and willingness to contribute to our outreach program.

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice law in Western Australia.
  • Current Working with Children Check.
  • National Police Check (dated within the last six months).
