Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) is seeking an experienced and exceptional leader to join our organisation in a full-time, ongoing role, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

AIDA is the national body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors and medical students, focused on equitable health and life outcomes for Indigenous people. We do this by working towards population parity of Indigenous medical students and doctors, and supporting a culturally safe healthcare system 

About the Role

Reporting to the CEO, the Director, Medical Workforce Development is responsible for leading the design, delivery and continuous improvement of national programs that strengthen the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical workforce across the full education, training and career continuum. The role drives workforce development initiatives that improve equity, cultural safety, progression, retention and leadership outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students, doctors in training, specialist trainees, Fellows and medical leaders.

Working collaboratively with medical colleges, universities, health services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, government agencies, regulators and communities, the Director will identify and address systemic barriers impacting participation and progression in medicine while advancing culturally safe workforce pathways and reforms.

Key Responsibilities

As Director, Medical Workforce Development, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership for workforce development programs that strengthen the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical workforce and improve health outcomes.
  • Translate the organisation's strategic priorities into practical workforce initiatives, annual plans, funded program deliverables and measurable outcomes.
  • Lead the ongoing development and delivery of the Specialist Trainee Support Program, increasing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors to enter, progress through and complete specialist training.
  • Lead national discussions and initiatives across the medical education and training continuum, from school engagement and university pathways through to specialist training, leadership development and continuing professional development.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with medical colleges, universities, health services, governments, regulators, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and industry stakeholders.
  • Advocate for policy, system and institutional reforms that improve recruitment, retention, progression and support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students and doctors.
  • Represent AIDA in national and international forums focused on Indigenous health, workforce development, cultural safety and health equity.
  • Establish and oversee monitoring, evaluation and reporting frameworks that demonstrate program impact and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Ensure all programs operate in accordance with funding agreements, governance requirements, risk management frameworks and Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, cultural safety, respect and continuous improvement.

About You

You are a strategic and values-driven leader with a passion for driving positive change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes. You bring strong stakeholder engagement skills, a collaborative leadership style and experience delivering complex programs and initiatives at a national level.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in medicine, public health, health education or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Demonstrated experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, medical workforce development, health policy, medical education, workforce strategy, public health or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical workforce pipeline and the barriers and opportunities experienced across all stages of training and leadership.
  • Proven ability to lead complex programs, manage funding agreements, budgets, project delivery and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated success working with government, universities, specialist medical colleges, health services, regulators, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and community stakeholders.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the preparation of Board papers, policy submissions, reports, briefing notes and funding proposals.
  • Strong cultural capability, sound judgement and ethical leadership, with a demonstrated commitment to self-determination, cultural safety, health equity and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership in medicine.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications in public health, health leadership, medical education, governance, policy, evaluation or business administration.
  • Experience in Indigenous Data Sovereignty, evaluation frameworks, impact measurement, research governance and program logic methodologies.
  • Experience representing organisations in national advisory groups, committees, conferences, government consultations or sector forums.
