About us

The NSW Ageing and Disability Commission (ADC) commenced operation on 1 July 2019, with the primary objectives of protecting and promoting the rights of adults with disability and older adults, and protecting them from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

The ADC was established against the background of a number of reviews and inquiries that highlighted opportunities for the NSW Government to do more to address the abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults with disability and older adults. These include the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into elder abuse (2016), the NSW Ombudsman’s report from its inquiry into the abuse and neglect of adults with disability in home and community settings (2018), and the NSW Law Reform Commission’s report from its review of the Guardianship Act 1987 (2018).

The establishment of the ADC is intended to address the concerns raised in these reports, by strengthening the ability to respond to abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults with disability and older adults, particularly from family members, spouses, informal carers, and members of the community.
