THE ROLE

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Legal Counsel to join our company. As a Not for Profit organisation you will play a part in supporting our nationwide trainees in starting their careers. You will work closely with the management team and staff across the organisation, providing day-to-day legal advice ranging from employment law matters, to compliance, regulation and commercial matters.

We are looking for a well-rounded junior to mid-level Legal Counsel who will report to, and work closely with, our Senior Legal Counsel / Company Secretary. The role will also work closely with our Heath Safety Co-ordinator and support a variety of business stakeholders, both internally and externally.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Provision of legal advice and support for employment-related matters to staff of AFLSR;
  • Provision of organisational legal advice;
  • Analysis and preparation of employment contracts and legal documentation;
  • Collaborate with People and Culture regarding employment matters including performance management processes;
  • Policy and project work; and
  • Assist the Senior Legal Counsel & Company Secretary with preparation of Board materials.

We operate in a highly collaborative, supportive and diverse environment, and whilst this is a hybrid role working from our Abbotsford office, we offer flexible working arrangements.

BENEFITS

  • Full-time, ongoing role (option for part-time, 4 day per week, ongoing);
  • Base salary $110,000 – $120,000 per annum (dependent on experience);

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

The following are essential requirements of the role:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law;
  • Currently hold, or be eligible to hold, a practising certificate in Australia;
  • Relevant legal experience in a law firm or inhouse (minimum 3 years);
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills including the capacity to explain in simple terms, legal concepts to people without legal experience;
  • Excellent legal analytical skills with attention to detail;
  • Superior problem-solving skills with high level of initiative, and a hands-on and collaborative problem-solving approach;
  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritise competing demands;
  • Able to maintain highly effective and collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders;
  • Commitment to and ability to implement best practice safety, environment and workplace relations standards;
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of respect for people across a range of backgrounds and cultures;
  • Current and up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination status; and
  • Current Working with Children Clearance.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience in, or strong working knowledge of, work health and safety law;
  • Experience in employment, workplace relations or contract / commercial law; and
  • Prior experience or knowledge of not for profit organisations.
