Advocacy for Disability Access and Inclusion

Advocacy for Disability Access and Inclusion is an independent disability advocacy organisation providing free, short term, issue specific advocacy support to people with disability in South Australia.

ADAI are recruiting for an Advocate in their National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP) for an immediate start in the Port Lincoln region, to work from 3 days per week (0.6 FTE) up to full-time (1.0 FTE). Flexible arrangements are considered.

Under the general direction of the NDAP Team Leader, the Advocacy role will ensure the provision of appropriate information, support and advocacy to people with disability, their carers and family on behalf of a person with a disability.

In this position you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring that people with disability are sufficiently informed to make their own choices and have their rights and interests respected.
  • Working alongside people with disability, their families and primary carers on behalf of people with disability, to provide current and relevant information on a range of issue-specific matters.
  • Identifying and exploring options and referring individuals to services as required.
  • Communicating with a diverse range of stakeholders to provide information and support to workers and agencies working with people with disabilities.
  • Building strong stakeholder relationships in local and regional communities.
  • Contributing to reporting requirements that meet the governance and contractual requirements of the organisation.
  • Participating in performance development and training, utilising networks, and attending professional development as required. Maintaining industry standards and legislative obligations.

To be successful in this role you must have:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective respectful advocacy support for clients with a wide range of disabilities through all aspects of an advocacy process supported by ADAI.
  • Local knowledge of services and resources relevant to people with a disability.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively, cooperatively and respectfully in a range of situations.

Qualifications & experience

  • Appropriate tertiary level qualifications combined with demonstrated relevant experience of a minimum of 2 years

Employment is subject to a satisfactory National Coordinated Criminal History/Police check and Working with Children Check and a current Australian issued Drivers Licence (equivalent to a minimum class C South Australian Licence). Child Safe Environments training is also a requirement.

ADAI is funded by the Australian Government. The Advocate reports to the Team Leader, NDAP.
