Australasian College for Emergency Medicine

About the College

The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for the training, assessment and continuing professional development of emergency physicians as well as the advancement of professional standards in emergency medicine in Australia and New Zealand.

We are a specialist medical College of over 120 employees with a strong purpose, positive environment and a CEO and Executive leadership team who lead our commitment to supporting our membership, staff and values of Equity, Respect, Integrity, and Collaboration.

The Position

A key function of the College is the accreditation of hospitals across Australia and New Zealand to enable them to be part of the College’s training program for doctors completing specialist qualifications in Emergency Medicine.

This is an exciting opportunity to go behind the scenes and understand how Australasian Emergency Departments operate. It is also an opportunity to influence how the next generations of Emergency Physicians Specialists are trained to ensure our communities will be better served.

Across Australia and New Zealand the Accreditation Unit manages the accreditation and inspection of around 160 hospitals and other medical sites with a clear focus on ensuring that the services involved in the delivery of the training program have the right staff, skillsets, culture and resources to ensure a quality experience for our specialists in training.

The Accreditation Officer is an integral part of the Accreditation Unit team that facilitates the smooth running of the accreditation process. The team is part of the Training Department and has very significant interaction with other units in that department.

This role involves:

  • Liaising with hospitals and College accreditation inspectors to set up the accreditation process, attending inspections (onsite or virtually) at hospitals across Australia and New Zealand and drafting the inspection reports. This requires strong report writing and planning skills, a flair for data gathering and analysis, and communication.
  • Contributing to the review of accreditation applications to ensure that the College has all the necessary information in place prior to the actual hospital inspections. This requires a keen eye for detail and a collaborative approach to teamwork.
  • Supporting hospitals and trainees with queries about the accreditation process. This requires good communication skills and an ability to think outside the box.
  • Contributing to the Accreditation Unit’s day to day administration and management. This requires solid word processing, record keeping, data collation and planning skills.
