ABOUT ABSEC
AbSec – NSW Child, Family and Community Peak Aboriginal Corporation, is the peak organisation for Aboriginal children, young people and families in NSW. We provide an Aboriginal perspective on child protection and out-of-home care policy to the NSW Government and support Aboriginal-led organisations deliver effective services for Aboriginal children, young people and families. We are a not-for-profit, incorporated community organisation, governed by an all-Aboriginal board.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking an experienced Manager, People and Culture to lead all aspects of human resources, employee experience, and organisational culture at AbSec in an ongoing role.
This role provides strategic and operational leadership across workforce planning, employee and industrial relations, payroll oversight, learning and development, and Work Health and Safety (WHS). You will work closely with leaders and managers across the organisation, providing practical, high-quality advice while ensuring compliance with legislative, Award, and policy requirements.
This role is suited to someone who is confident operating at both strategic and operational levels, comfortable managing complexity, and committed to strengthening organisational capability in a culturally safe and values-led way.
What you'll be doing
- Lead and manage all People and Culture functions, including employee relations, industrial relations, payroll oversight, learning and development, performance management, and workforce strategy.
- Provide high-level advice to the Executive and Leadership Team on people, culture, and WHS risks, trends, and opportunities.
- Partner with leaders and managers to build a positive, high-performing organisational culture aligned with AbSec’s values.
- Develop, implement, and review people and WHS policies, procedures, and systems to ensure compliance with legislation, Awards, and best-practice standards.
- Design and deliver learning and development initiatives aligned with organisational priorities.
- Prepare reports and provide insights to support informed decision-making by the Executive and Board.
- Actively contribute to AbSec’s broader objectives, uphold organisational values, and participate in professional and organisational development activities.
What we're looking for - Selection Criteria:
- Demonstrated commitment and capacity to promote the rights, interests and aspirations of Aboriginal people.
- Applied knowledge and understanding of contemporary HR practices and performance management systems.
- Experience in developing and implementing people strategies aligned to organisational goals.
- Ability to partner with management and staff across a broad range of human resource functions.
- Demonstrated experience influencing and leveraging relationships to gain commitment to action that support business objectives. Strong working knowledge of employment legislation, industrial relations, and work, health and safety requirements.
- Experience in overseeing end-to-end recruitment (including job design, analysis and role evaluation), induction, and on-boarding, performance and learning and development process.
- Practical knowledge of WHS systems, Workers Compensation and WHS Committees.
- Experience in managing complex employee relations including coaching.
- Proficiency in HR systems and reporting, Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint and other office productivity tools, with aptitude to learn new software and systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, with an understanding of their cultures, communities, and ways of working.
- Demonstrated commitment and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done, adaptability and enjoys a challenge.
- Relevant tertiary qualification and current AHRI Membership.
- Experience working in a not-for-profit organisation or organisation supporting Aboriginal communities.
