AAMRI NSW is the New South Wales chapter of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI), representing the state’s independent medical research institutes and supporting collaboration, advocacy and sector leadership across the NSW health and medical research system.

The Executive Officer, AAMRI NSW is responsible for leading AAMRI NSW’s policy, advocacy, government relations and strategic collaboration activities to advance the interests of the NSW health and medical research sector.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of AAMRI and working closely with the AAMRI NSW Co-Chair/s, the role will drive implementation of the AAMRI NSW Strategy and associated collaboration initiatives, strengthen engagement with the NSW Government and sector stakeholders, and support the continued growth of AAMRI NSW as a trusted and influential voice for medical research in New South Wales.

The role requires a highly strategic and relationship-focused leader with strong policy, stakeholder engagement and project management capabilities, and the ability to operate effectively in a complex and fast-paced environment.

Based in New South Wales, the Executive Officer role predominantly operates remotely, with regular engagement across the NSW health and medical research institute sector and periodic travel as required.

Key responsibilities:

Collaboration Projects and Strategic Initiatives

  • Lead the delivery of activities funded through the Office of Health and Medical Research Collaboration Projects Grant. Activities include focus areas on AI, biobanking, commercialisation of research, and consumer and community involvement in research (please note subject matter experience in these areas is not required).
  • Manage project planning, governance, resourcing, budgeting and reporting requirements to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and within budget.
  • Consult with members, government and other stakeholders to identify, scope and progress strategic collaboration opportunities.
  • Develop project plans that clearly articulate objectives, governance structures, timelines, deliverables and stakeholder responsibilities.
  • Monitor project risks and dependencies and implement mitigation strategies where required.

Project Management and Organisational Support

  • Provide high-quality secretariat and administrative support to the AAMRI NSW Co-Chairs, Chapter Committee and NSW-based AAMRI networks.
  • Coordinate meetings, agendas, papers, minutes and follow-up actions in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work collaboratively with the broader AAMRI team to support organisational priorities and contribute to a cohesive national approach.

Government and Stakeholder Relations

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with NSW parliamentarians, government agencies, medical research institutes, universities, industry representatives and other key stakeholders.
  • Prepare high-quality policy, budget and funding submissions to the NSW Government.
  • Represent AAMRI NSW in meetings, forums and consultations with government and sector stakeholders.
  • Identify and respond to emerging government priorities and opportunities relevant to the medical research sector.
  • Demonstrate and communicate the value and impact of AAMRI NSW to members and external stakeholders.

Medical Research Policy and Advocacy

  • Monitor and analyse policy, funding and sector developments affecting health and medical research in NSW and nationally.
  • Undertake policy analysis and develop evidence-based recommendations and advocacy positions.
  • Prepare reports, briefing papers, policy documents, submissions, presentations and fact sheets for a range of audiences.
  • Provide strategic policy and advocacy advice to the AAMRI NSW Co-Chairs, Chapter Committee and members.
  • Support coordinated advocacy activities that advance the priorities of the NSW medical research sector.

Other Duties

  • Undertake additional duties consistent with the role, as directed by the Chief Executive Officer of AAMRI and/or the AAMRI NSW Co-Chairs.
