about the role

  • Time required: 3 hours/week
  • Annual Budget: $250,000-$400,000
  • Number of Paid Staff: 1 - 3
  • Number of Volunteers: 6-20
  • Current Board Size: 8-12
  • Board Meetings (frequency): monthly
  • Board Meetings Held: At Night (online/dial in)
  • Payment: Nil - honorary role
  • Targeting: Females, People with Disabilities, Seniors/Retired People, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander, English as an additional language or dialect, LGBTQI

Overall duties

  • Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.
  • Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
  • Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits. 

Specific tasks:

  • Liaise with relevant staff, Board members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.
  • Assist fellow Board members to be aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data.
  • Regularly report the financial position at Board meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc).
  • Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, i.e.:
  • Delegations schedule
  • Bank signatories and approvals
  • Purchasing processes 
  • Petty cash/ float
  • Salary, Leave & Pension payments
  • PAYG payments 
  • BAS returns
  • Others as appropriate
  • Appraise the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.
  • Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner.
