Our Living Outback works to promote the rich natural and cultural heritage of Outback Queensland, highlight the hard work and commitment of people working to conserve nature in the Outback, and advocate for increased investment in people and nature in Outback Queensland. Our Living Outback is an alliance of conservation organisations focused on the growth and management of protected areas in Outback Queensland and includes the Pew Charitable Trusts, who coordinate activities of the alliance. 

The Community Campaigner will work with the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Queensland team, supporting campaigns to protect the Channel Country of the Lake Eyre Basin and expand Queensland’s protected areas. 

Summary

Queensland is the most biologically diverse state in an exceptionally diverse country. Over the past three years, the Our Living Outback alliance has been working across Queensland to grow the protected area estate, secure funding commitments to support large scale conservation land management and obtain durable protection for the internationally important rivers and floodplains of Queensland’s Channel Country. 

Purpose

The Community Campaigner will contribute to the Our Living Outback Queensland campaigns by:

  • Leading the delivery of a supporter engagement plan to build a mobilised base of supporters online and offline
  • Leading outreach with the wider community to raise awareness for nature conservation in Queensland 
  • Support the delivery of communications particularly those focused on mobilising key constituencies

Duties

Engagement:

  • Directly engage with the public to help promote and protect Queensland’s environment, in line with campaign goals, including organising and attending community-based information stalls and events, both small and large.
  • Build and manage the online supporter database. 
  • Transition online and offline supporters to a program of activation and engagement - digital and on-ground - to increase our political impact and, over time, our supporters’ commitment and contribution to campaign goals.
  • Help build community networks and relationships. 
  • Deliver supporter communications, including drafting and devising eDMs (in line with engagement strategy).
  • Deliver social media, including creating a social media strategy, advertisements and compelling content for digital platforms.

Communications:

  • Support the development of campaign materials, including creating content.
  • Assist with website content and design.
  • Help develop media stories and photo opportunities.

Campaign Support:

  • Contribute to campaign planning and strategies. 

Attributes and skills we’re looking for in a Community Campaigner

  • Passion and energy to get excellent outcomes for nature conservation.
  • Experience in community outreach and organising, volunteer management and coordination
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement projects and collaborative initiatives, including ability to prioritise competing time demands.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a small team as well as being a self-starter, comfortable to work with limited supervision. 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including production of some written and online communications materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with and engaging diverse stakeholder groups. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours including regular weekends and an ability to travel.
  • A driver’s license and a car.

Management

The Community Campaigner will report to the Queensland Campaigner with additional guidance from the Partnerships Manager and the Queensland Manager. 

Location

The role is based in Brisbane with an office located in the Brisbane CBD. Hybrid work arrangements are in place offering the flexibility to work from home 40% of the time.

Terms

  • A contract will be offered to 30 September 2022 with a probable extension until 31 December 2022, dependent on continued funding.
  • The contract is for 5 days per week and will include some travel, weekend and after hours work.
  • Dependent on experience, the rate offered will be between $265 - $312 per day plus Superannuation
