Parkville College is a multi-campus college spanning Parkville Youth Justice Precinct, Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, and Secure Welfare units in Maribynong and Ascot Vale. Parkville College is a registered specialist school that delivers senior secondary certificates for all children and young people detained in the custody of the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

The college delivers education to, and in the best interest of, some of Victoria's most vulnerable, yet inspiring young people who are filled with enormous potential. The Parkville College education model incorporates strong local partnerships to deliver a flexible range of educational opportunities including VCAL and VET, in addition to the provision of holistic support to meet well-being needs and rehabilitative goals. In recognition of the custodial environment and exisiting educational disadvantage, the school program includes weekends and term breaks, to enhance the learning opportunities for the children and young people in custody and secure services.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated ability to work with vulnerable young people, their families and communities to achieve positive outcomes and build strong relationships.
  2. Demonstrated proficiency to work cooperatively and build sustained partnerships with and between a range of stakeholders including students, parents, Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) school-based practitioners, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs), Apprenticeship Support Networks (ASNs) and employers.
  3. Ability to work both independently and within a geographically dispersed team, adhering to program guidelines in a high-pressure demand driven environment.
  4. An understanding of secondary school qualifications, operations, and VET qualifications.
  5. Excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to self-manage caseloads.
  6. High-level verbal and written communication skills, which includes preparation of reports, development of resources, and presentations as required.
  7. Parkville College is guided by an evidence based culturally responsive pedagogy. Provide an example from your experience that demonstrates your understanding and implementation of Culturally Responsive Practice in an educational setting.

Role

This vacancy is located at our Malmsbury Campus.

Attendance Requirement: Some attendance during school holidays may be required. Leave Purchase Allowance will be paid during these days.

Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions.  Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions, subject to the size and complexity of school operations. 

Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal. Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school. Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.

Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employees position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities

The Coordinator is responsible for the establishment, management and monitoring of students’ pathways which may include school based or full-time apprenticeships and traineeships.

This includes:

  • working with the members of the Parkville College, Malmsbury Transition Team to build supportive relationships with the young person, whilst determining their needs, aspirations, skills and attributes relevant to an apprenticeship/traineeship pathway
  • working with schools to provide careers, pathways, program advice and support to students and assess their suitability for an apprenticeship/traineeship pathway
  • developing relationships with relevant employers and/or working through localised partner organisations to create apprenticeship/traineeship pathway experiences for students at Parkville College, Malmsbury
  • coordinating the design of the pathway and developing the individual pathway plan for each student
  • supporting students, schools, employers, and RTOs throughout the student’s apprenticeship or traineeship, providing case-management and referral services, and supporting the student to maintain their pathway to completion
  • accepting support from and integrating work with the Loddon Campaspe Head Start Cluster team.

The Coordinator will:

  • regularly monitor student progress and revise the pathway plan each semester, as necessary
  • in agreement with the employer, visit the workplace at least once per term to ensure that the placement remains suitable, and the student is developing the required skills and progressing satisfactorily 
  • liaise with the TAFE/RTO and the employer to monitor the student’s progress as agreed in the pathway plan and the Training Plan
  • assist in the creation of activities and/or training that will support the young person to build the skills and attributes which will contribute to making them apprenticeship/traineeship ready, eg: VET Certificate II programs, work placement or Structured Workplace Learning experiences
  • attend Loddon Campaspe Head Start team meetings
  • liaise with localised organisations from the student’s home community to enable effective and integrated full-time or school-based apprenticeship management. These organisations may include Head Start Clusters, LLENs or other appropriate identified service agencies
  • make use of industry knowledge and intelligence developed from building effective relationships with employers to assist other Parkville College staff to have insights into the employability skills they are seeking from young people
  • In conjunction with Transition Team members, assist students to develop and utilise contemporary approaches to employment interaction and engagement. e.g. written and digital based resume and cover letter preparation.  

Who May Apply

Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfil the specific requirements of the position.

Individuals with a good knowledge and understanding of secondary school qualifications and operations. Who have the ability to build employer networks and recruit employers to engage in the program. This would include building employer and industry connections to source and support the delivery apprenticeships and traineeships.

An understanding of the apprenticeship sector and/or secondary schools will be highly regarded
