  • Remuneration: HEO 8.1 ($99,644.03) pro rata = $70,308.83 p.a. + leave loading and 17% superannuation

Position Context

The La Trobe University Student Union (LTSU) is currently experiencing a period of significant organisational change, and this role presents an opportunity for genuine professional growth, creative problem solving, and independent, self-directed work.

The Representation & Operations Manager is the sole staff member and reports to the LTSU President, and through that office to the Student Council and Executive.

In conjunction with the LTSU President, the Representation & Operations Manager coordinates the LTSU’s student representation activities and manages the operational processes of the organisation.

The Representation & Operations Manager exercises a high degree of judgement, combined with consideration of other areas of LTSU’s operation and governance, to further the LTSU’s objectives within and beyond the University.

The LTSU is an independently incorporated association, providing student representation for La Trobe students enrolled at the University’s Bundoora and City campuses. Governed by an annually elected Student Council, LTSU operates through a team of elected student representatives. Two associated organisations operate under the LTSU umbrella – the International Students Association and the Mature Aged Students Association.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure effective operations of the LTSU through adherence to Collective Agreement terms and conditions, OHS and equal opportunity requirements, and University funding requirements;
  • Advise the LTSU President regarding compliance with University statutes, policies and procedures, internal LTSU regulations, policies and procedures, and the LTSU’s broader legislative requirements;
  • Providing coaching, induction, training, development and guidance to LTSU student leaders;
  • Oversight of risk management, finance, and engagement and communication activities;
  • Provide strategic support and guidance to LTSU’s Student Council Executive, Associated Bodies and President;
  • Coordinate the production of key communications and coordinate the submission of applications on behalf of LTSU; and
  • Potential management of volunteers and casual staff, as required.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience;
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment, demonstrating:
    • Accountability to a committee of management or similar body;
    • Responsibility for achievement of organisational objectives and the operation of programs in pursuit of those objectives;
    • Proven record of working within and monitoring a budget/ resources/ funding and an understanding of financial management procedures; and
    • Ability to work within a complex internal and external legislative and regulatory framework, preferably in a Student Union context.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Skills in motivating individuals and teams, influencing and negotiating effective outcomes, consulting successfully with a broad range of stakeholders and facilitation of group discussions;
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously, with broad direction; and
  • Ability to think strategically and “outside the box” in order to achieve objectives.

Desirable: A knowledge of the principles and practice of student affairs in the Australian tertiary education sector, and an awareness of developments within the sector relevant to student organisations, or similar social justice/non-profit awareness.

Internal Relationships

Elected LTSU student office bearers, particularly the President and other members of the Student Executive.

External Liaison

  • A broad range of University staff;
  • Contractors engaged by the LTSU (including auditors, legal advisers, Returning Officer);
  • Industry associations; and
  • Staff at other student organisations and universities.

Conditions of Employment

Terms and conditions of the LTSU Collective Agreement apply to this position. They include:

Superannuation: 17% of salary

Annual Leave: 4 weeks per year, plus additional paid leave between Christmas and New Year
