About the position

The Senior Electorate Officer supports the local Member of Parliament in their representation of local constituents, through both networks of government and non-government organisations.

The electorate office of Balmain is the direct link to NSW State Parliament for local constituents, advocating on their behalf to various government and non-government agencies to deliver progressive, inclusive outcomes for the whole community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overall responsibility for all constituent relations including face-to-face interactions, phone liaison and drafting of written correspondence;
  • Preparation of formal written correspondence as well as written and digital content for constituent outreach materials and social media;
  • Develop and implement media strategies and identify and pursue proactive and reactive media opportunities;
  • Liaise with and on behalf of social housing residents in relation to tenancy and maintenance issues with a range of government departments, empowering them to self-manage issues;
  • Keep client records up to date and track ongoing correspondence on behalf of constituents to ensure matters are dealt with promptly; and
  • Manage a range of local community grants programs.

Selection criteria

  1. Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with community groups, government and non-government organisations.
  2. Excellent writing skills including the ability to prepare formal correspondence, media releases, briefing notes, submissions, speeches and newsletters.
  3. Demonstrated superior organisational skills and ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  4. Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgement and ability to perform at a high standard under limited supervision and within a team environment.
  5. An interest in, and understanding of, the Australian political context and Australian parliamentary procedures and processes.
  6. Demonstrated research and analytical skills including the ability to analyse policy and legislation, and
  7. Demonstrated personal resilience and self-awareness. Experience in social work, psychology, early childhood, family therapy or similar fields would be of benefit in this role.
