The ACT Public Advocate (who is also the Children and Young People Commissioner) is seeking a passionate, highly organised, and motivated Senior Advocate to support her in exercising her statutory oversight functions, which protect and promote the rights, safety, and wellbeing of Canberran’s experiencing vulnerability.

Senior Advocates are responsible for leading small, specialised teams undertaking individual and systemic advocacy, oversight of service systems, systemic reform processes and projects.

The successful applicant for this permanent position will apply their excellent organisational, human services, and/or legal skills to effectively triage and respond to a wide range of information received by the Public Advocate and will take the lead in exercising the Public Advocate's functions in supporting vulnerable people involved with protection matters at the courts. 

This role perfectly blends leadership, direct client engagement, and systemic reform opportunities to make positive and lasting change across a range of services including mental health, disability, and personal/family/workplace violence.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as Social Work, Psychology, Law, Mental Health, Child Protection, etc. are highly desirable.
  2. This position does not require a pre-employment medical.
  3. Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. Notes: Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.

A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
