About the Gap Youth and Community Centre

The Gap Youth and Community Centre Aboriginal Corporation (GYCC), a not-for-profit community-based organisation, has been providing assistance and support to at-risk children, young people, their families and their communities in Alice Springs since 1977. As a multi-service organisation funded by Territory and Federal government, the GYCC provides a range of support programs and activities to assist and empower young people to make positive choices and decisions for their future.

For 45 years, the GYCC has been providing support and assistance to children and young people based on individual need including assistance with educational engagement, housing and homelessness, vocational training, employment assistance, crime prevention and intervention, information, referral, advocacy, practical assistance, drop-in, and recreational activities.

Program Description

The GYCC After Hours Youth Services (AHYS) program operates as an early intervention drop-in service 7 days a week from 3.30pm – 9.30pm. We provide a culturally appropriate space for young people aged between 10 to 17 years to engage in a diverse range of age and gender appropriate activities, including access to sport, life skills, music, arts, workshops, educational and school holidays’ activities.

Role Description

The primary purpose of the position is to engage with and build rapport with young people who access the GYCC through activities on offer at the centre. The position works as part of a team of youth workers who work using trauma informed and strengths-based practices. The position reports to the AHYP Team Leaders and works collaboratively with each other, and with our Youth Diversion and Reconnect case managers and is supported by the AHYP Team Leaders, our Program Manager and the CEO.

Responsibilities

Main Duties:

  • Deliver age and gender appropriate recreational and educational activities that are both safe and culturally appropriate, using trauma informed and strengths-based practice.
  • Build rapport with young people that is appropriate and reflects the values set out in the GYCC Employee Handbook and the AHYP Induction Manual.
  • Work as a team to provide a safe and collaborative environment as directed by the AHYP Team Leader/s.
  • Work in partnership with key service providers to coordinate and deliver activities to support young people.
  • Refer young people to internal and external services where appropriate in consultation with the AHYS Team Leader/s.

Work Health and Safety:

  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and for the health and safety of others in the workplace.
  • Work in accordance with the organisation’s Health and Safety Policies, the WHS Act and Regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with all statues and legislation, including reporting of WHS non-conformances, incidents/injuries and mandatory reporting.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Minimum qualification Certificate 3 in Youth Work, Community Services, or related field and/or appropriate experience.
  2. Demonstrated experience working with at risk indigenous youth and/or working with vulnerable young people.
  3. Knowledge and experience of trauma informed care and strengths-based practices, or willingness to train in these areas.
  4. Demonstrated ability to use initiative, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
  5. Sound communication skills and high levels of self-motivation, and the proven ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  6. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain complete confidentiality.
  7. Demonstrated administrative experience, including the ability to write incident reports and follow mandatory reporting guidelines when applicable.
  8. Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross cultural awareness and sensitivity in the workplace.
  9. Hold a current NT Manual Driver's License. LR License highly regarded.
  10. Hold a First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.

Desirable:

  1. Ability to speak a local Aboriginal language.
  2. Skills and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: sports, multimedia, arts, dance, music, nutrition/cooking or environment/gardening.

Employment with Gap is conditional on the employee providing:

  1. NT Working with Children Check (Ochre Card).
  2. Satisfactory Criminal History Check.
  3. Persons considered for a position with the GYCC may be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination and drug screen to determine fitness to perform nominated duties.
  4. Proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination compliance status.
