First Peoples Disability Network is the voice for mob with disability. FPDN is a national organisation of and for Australia’s First Peoples with disability, their families and communities. Our purpose is to promote respect for human rights, secure social justice, and empower First Peoples with disability to participate in Australian society on an equal basis with others.

About the opportunities

FPDN is recruiting for multiple short-term Policy Officer opportunities. These roles will contribute to high-impact work across systemic advocacy, policy development, community engagement, partnerships and project delivery. There may also be more senior role opportunities for the right candidates, depending on experience.

We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Early childhood policy / service systems / reform
  • Justice / law and related policy work (e.g., legal policy, corrections, child protection, family violence, human rights, justice reinvestment)
  • Community engagement (community-led ways of working, consultation, relationship-building, co-design)

What you’ll do (depending on role)

Responsibilities will vary by position, but may include:

  • Developing policy advice and advocacy materials (briefs, submissions, talking points, position content)Undertaking research, analysis and synthesis to support evidence-based reform
  • Supporting community engagement and consultation activities, including co-design processes
  • Representing FPDN, and building and maintaining relationships with community, ACCOs, disability sector partners, and government stakeholders
  • Coordinating projects and deliverables, including planning, reporting and documentation
  • Contributing to accessible communications (including adapting content for different audiences where required)

About you

We’re looking for people who bring strong judgement, collaboration, and a commitment to rights-based work. You will ideally have:

  • Demonstrated experience in policy roles, preferably in government, community-controlled organisations, disability, or social justice contexts.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex issues for different audiences.
  • Stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to work respectfully across community and institutional settings.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality work with a high level of autonomy.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience in early childhood and/or justice/law reform.
  • Experience in community engagement and culturally safe practice.
  • Lived experience of disability FPDN is committed to a culturally safe and accessible workplace.
