About the team

The Cancer Information and Support Services (CISS) Division aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one needs to face cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer journey, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

The position of Supportive Care Specialist will contribute to Cancer Council’s mission under the strategic priority of cancer information and support, enabling the provision of quality peer support services including Telephone Support Groups, Cancer Connect and the Cancer Council Online Community. The position will also provide professional counselling support through the Cancer Counselling Program.

About the role:

To facilitate the delivery of the Cancer Peer Support and Counselling services (Supportive Care Services), core psychosocial and emotional support services of Cancer Council NSW. Cancer Peer Support and Counselling services facilitate access to peer support and counselling for people affected by cancer; to reduce their levels of distress, increase their coping strategies and to help them feel less isolated.

This is a part-time role 4 days per week. The successful candidate will be required to work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Provide evidenced based information on a range of cancer types to clients accessing 131120 information and support and referred to Cancer Peer Support and Counselling services.
  • Demonstrate a client centric culture by actively working to improve our understanding of client needs and enhance the client experience across our staff and services.
  • Refer clients to relevant support services and facilitate client access to professional counselling and/or peer support in accordance with service operating guidelines.
  • Provision of individual and group psychosocial / therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face engagement, across our peer support and counselling services.
  • Engage in moderation of our Cancer Council Online Community.
  • Deliver training for peer support volunteers and facilitators.
  • Provide briefing and debriefing support to peer support volunteers and facilitators.
  • Contribute to review of peer support volunteer and facilitator performance and identify gaps in service, to ensure volunteer / facilitator competency in peer support provision and inform recruitment and continuity of volunteer / facilitator positions.
  • Maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective delivery of supportive care services.
  • Ensure data collection is accurate and in accordance with Cancer Council NSW privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Supportive Care, assist with services reporting as required.
  • Contribute to the analysis of issues raised by peer support and counselling clients, and the peer support volunteers and facilitators, to inform evaluation and improve service delivery within the Supportive Care services and Cancer Council NSW.
  • Provide service information and contribute to promotional activities, developing key health professional relationships to ensure service awareness and equity of access for people affected by cancer.
  • Undertake development planning and training to continually improve knowledge and skills required to provide effective psychosocial and emotional support for people with cancer.
  • Participate and contribute to the support and training of new Cancer Council staff.
  • Contribute to overall effective operation and delivery of the Supportive Care Services.

About you

Essential:

  • Counselling or Psychology tertiary qualification or equivalent
  • Registration with a national peak body e.g. PACFA, ACA, APHRA
  • Experience providing individual and group therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face
  • Knowledge of psychosocial support
  • Sound computer experience in Microsoft Programs including CRM

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in supportive care of cancer patients and their carers
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Training / presentation skills and experience
  • Evident ability to take initiative
