About Trades Hall

The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in the state of Victoria. It provides industrial support for affiliated unions and runs campaigns to promote the interests of Victorian workers. The Young Workers Centre (YWC) is a community organising and legal centre that advocates for Victorian workers aged 30 and under.

About Young Workers Centre

The role of the Young Workers Centre is to educate and organise young workers so they can prevent and challenge unfair, unsafe and illegal treatment they experience in workplaces. The role of the Young Workers Centre’s legal team is to provide high quality legal assistance to young workers without a union in their workplace to drive improvements in employer behaviour and to run strategic litigation in order to shift legal norms, industry behaviour and community views.

The position is based at Trades Hall in Carlton, Victoria.

DUTIES FOR THIS ROLE INCLUDE

  • Draft written and verbal legal advice given to clients of the centre
  • Prepare proceedings in court or tribunal issued on behalf of clients of the YWC
  • Represent clients in FWC and other court and tribunals as required
  • Manage own caseload, under supervision
  • Identify organising opportunities in casework
  • Assist the Principal Solicitor with
    • supervising and training advocates;
    • monitoring quality of legal services and client intake processes; and
    • ensuring YWC funding KPIs relating to legal service are met
  • Participate in YWC and VTHC planning forums
  • Other duties as required

Skills & experience

Essential pre-requisites:

  • Hold or eligible to hold a practicing certificate as a solicitor in Victoria
  • Experience representing workers in employment and industrial law matters
  • Detailed knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) and industrial, employment and occupational health and safety laws

Other desirable skills and experience:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organisational and administration skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting young workers
  • An ability to work in a cooperative and consultative manner
  • Demonstrated high level of computer literacy including Excel (eg underpayment calculations), Outlook, Word and the ability to learn new casefile management databases

Selection criteria

  1. Experience as a solicitor or paralegal practising in relevant legal areas
  2. A strong and demonstrated commitment to trade unionism
  3. Ability to manage a high volume case load
  4. Experience communicating with young people from diverse backgrounds
  5. Experience working with volunteers
  6. Some campaign/collective action experience

Attractive base salary, dependent on experience plus 12% superannuation. Flexible work arrangements negotiable. Generous conditions including 20% annual leave loading and monthly RDOs.
