About the program
Wesley Mission has a real mission – to reach out to a community with real needs. Through witness, work and with the help of supporters we can turn lives around for good. As part of Wesley’s Community and Family Care group, the Student Well Being Worker is partially funded by the Department of Education and the school community itself, to work closely with the school learning and support team or wellbeing committee by delivering student resilience and wellbeing services. The Student Well Being Worker will provide services via groups and one-on-one short and long term interventions to children and youth at a local Public School, who are exploring social skills, healthy relationships and work with young people and their families to identify strategies to stabilise and enhance their health and wellbeing.
- Brief, short-term and long-term early intervention support to young people aged 5-13years
- information, referral and brief assistance
- develop locally tailored partnerships
- facilitation of groups within the school systems in response to school community need and in consultation with the school principal
- Attending Parents & Citizens’ or equivalent parent body meetings as required providing details of the program and the services that are available.
About the role
The Student Wellbeing Worker (SWW) is a role that is a part of the Wesley Newcastle Child, Youth and Family team. The SWW will work out of a local public school in the Newcastle area providing one on one support, group and referrals to specialist services to support and enhance student’s wellbeing.
Wesley Mission provides regular supervision and support for all staff as well as range of opportunities for professional development and staff benefits. This is a child-related position and preferred applicants will be required to undergo a working with children’s check and criminal record history check.
- Cert IV in youth work with relevant experience. The qualification must include competencies in ‘mental health’ and ‘making appropriate referrals’
- Outline your experience of facilitating groups with young people and describe what you consider to be the key components of effective group leadership
- Ability to engage children, young people and families at the point of initial service contact, and build relationships of trust and cooperation
- A passion for and experience in collaborating with young people experiencing complex disadvantage including racism, sexism, Islamophobia, transphobia and homophobia
- A strong history of having authentic conversations with young people about their safety, family dynamics and other tough conversations
- Proven ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. A strong knowledge of the impacts of colonolisation and the subsequent barriers this creates for First Nations Peoples
- High level written and verbal communication skills, with experience developing case summaries and completing child protection reports and entering this information into electronic client management systems
- The role requires highly organised, enthusiastic and self- motivated people. Please provide recent examples where you’ve demonstrated these qualities
- Demonstrated ability to have conversations with young people and their families about child protection matters. Please outline your process of informing young people about child protection reports and the follow up reporting processes.

- Current NSW or National driver’s license and working with children’s check
- Qualifications/training in group programs that are tailored to children and young people
- Qualifications and/or experience in working with young people who have emerging or early signs of mental ill health
Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010, Level 4, with capacity for salary packaging. Superannuation is paid in addition at 9.5%.
