The company

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF) is the lead charity for the Great Barrier Reef, dedicated exclusively to funding solutions for its long-term conservation.

Made up of 2,900 reefs along 2,300km of Queensland's coastline, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the largest United Nations World Heritage areas. It contributes over $6bn annually to the Australian economy and generates more than 64,000 jobs.

GBRF leads the collaboration of business, science, government and philanthropy – groups who would not otherwise come together – for the benefit of the Reef. Their success is due to the quality of institutions and people they bring together – harnessing advances in science, technology and industry to ensure a future for this global treasure.

The role

This is a new role within the Traditional Owner Partnerships team of the GBRF that involves extensive engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef and their representative structures.

The position will work closely with the established GBRF Traditional Owner Working Group to develop and manage various projects that deliver on Traditional Owner led priorities in water quality, crown-of-thorn-starfish control, reef restoration and adaptation, and integrated monitoring and reporting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the development of a culturally grounded co-design and co-delivery approach to program design and implementation with Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Effectively engage with Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners and their partners, key government agencies, Reef industries and sectors to progress delivery of priority projects under the Reef Trust Partnership Agreement.
  • Conduct culturally appropriate, ethical research and analysis then translate into written proposals and verbal presentations.
  • Report and provide advice to management and members of the Traditional Owner Working Group and any other sub-working groups on the development, management, monitoring and reporting of Traditional Owner led projects.

About you

In addition to being passionate about the Reef, you have a personal understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owners in Australia including an understanding of diverse circumstances and variances that apply at regional and local scales. You will have live project management skills gained from on the ground experience with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Your proven project management skills include an ability to synthesise multiple lines of information, strong time management, good written and verbal communications, contract and budget management.

Ideally, you will possess:

  • Sound practical knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, beliefs, observances, practices and how these relate to self-determination and contemporary decision-making.
  • Project Management qualifications and/or equivalent experience delivering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led projects.
  • Monitoring and evaluation experience of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander projects.
  • A sound understanding of the joint Australian and Queensland governments Reef 2050 Plan and Investment Framework and Reef Trust Partnership Agreement
  • Qualifications and/or relevant experience in one or more: water quality, crown-of-thorns-starfish control, reef restoration and adaptation; integrated monitoring and evaluation

The rewards

This new role in an amazing organisation provides the opportunity to work closely with Traditional Owners to help create positive pathways for a healthier Reef with improved resilience for future generations. The opportunity exists for a values driven Project Manager who is passionate about supporting Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef, and how through working with integrity and ethics can create empowerment in across one of the world’s most important natural and cultural landscapes.

You will be authorised to trial and innovate, whilst being given a platform to evolve co-design to deliver a program of Traditional Owner Reef protection projects along the Great Barrier Reef.

This full-time role is offered with flexible working arrangements, and whilst a Townsville based candidate is preferred, a Cairns or Brisbane location will be considered for an exceptional candidate.
