The Role

We are currently offering a traineeship open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to join our team in either Launceston or Hobart. The position is full or part-time with a maximum term basis of up to 12 months.

As our Aboriginal Community Support Worker, Trainee, you will receive on-the-job training whilst studying towards your Certificate III or IV in Community Services (or similar), and will work as part of a team to facilitate the delivery of quality services and achieve positive outcomes with service users in a positive and proactive environment across sectors which may include disability, mental health and youth support.

Working closely with your workplace coach, your main responsibilities will be to assist with the following: 

  • Provide quality direct support to service users in line with their support needs, the program they are accessing, and all support plans including the service users Individual Plan.
  • Increase the service users’ skills:- independence, personal growth and development through the provision of active support and their enhanced participation as a valued member of their community.
  • Assist in developing personal / individual plans by assisting to identify goals and objectives to meet the needs of the individual in care.
  • Participate in a team environment, with capacity to build up skills and experience to work autonomously or within a small team environment.
  • Ensure that the rights, interests and needs of the service users are addressed effectively.

Skills and Experience:

  • Must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Ability to complete a Certificate III Community Services within traineeship period – ie 12 months
  • A current Senior First Aid Certificate.
  • A current unrestricted Drivers Licence.
  • A commitment to supporting and promoting the individual needs, skills, abilities and personal goals of service users.
  • Computer literacy, competent administration and documentation skills.
  • Ability to use initiative and to work as part of a team and contribute to team goals.

All positions within Life Without Barriers will be required to undergo probity checks including criminal record checks and hold Tasmanian Working With Vulnerable People Registration.
