About us

Darebin Council is a leader in Environmental Sustainability and Social Justice: we were the first Council to declare a Climate Emergency in 2017. Darebin has committed to a number of environmental targets, including improved water quality, sustainable water use, waste minimisation and increase resource recovery.

We recognise that we are in a state of climate emergency, where we need to restore a safe climate at emergency speed, in order to avoid dramatic and negative impacts on our community and around the world. Our Climate Emergency Plan was developed in 2017 setting out the actions to mobilise out community on this issue.

About the role

Darebin City Council is looking for Senior Environment Programs Officer to lead Council’s strategies, policies and projects relating to waste and water, and the climate emergency. You will be making a direct impact on our community as a permanent member of our Climate Emergency and Sustainable Transport team.

The Senior Environment Programs Officer (Waste & Water) is responsible for leading Council’s waste agenda, including implementing projects and initiatives within Council’s Waste and Litter Strategy. You will be developing innovative approaches and responses to the Climate Emergency.

The role is also responsible for contributing to Council’s objectives under the Watershed: Towards a Sensitive City Strategy. The role will identify project partnership opportunities for innovative projects and trials, develop business cases to support strategies and programs and identify advocacy opportunities to progress Council objectives.

To be successful in this role you will have

  • An understanding of environmental issues, specifically recycling, waste and water management issues as they relate to local government.
  • Ability to research prepare reports and business cases, and provide timely and concise professional advice on matters as required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with and gain cooperation of all levels of management, staff and community.
  • Demonstrated project management and development skills, including risk, budgeting and resource management.
  • A tertiary qualification in environmental management or science, sustainability, waste management or related field, and/or demonstrated equivalent competencies gained through substantial experience in these or related fields.
