About us

Youth Support + Advocacy Service (YSAS) is one of Australia’s largest and most comprehensive, youth specific community service organisation that enables young people experiencing serious disadvantage to access the resources and support they require to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

YSAS is a Child Safe organisation. We actively promote the safety and wellbeing of young people, and are committed to protecting young people from harm or abuse who come into contact with and/or access our service. Applicants must undergo rigorous screening and recruitment processes, including providing evidence of current WWCC and National Police Check.

About the position

As a highly experienced and autonomous member of the multidisciplinary YSAS primary health team, the Registered Nurse provides direct primary health care activities to marginalised and at-risk young people entering Victoria’s two Secure Care Units and their stakeholders.

With the support of the YSAS Primary Health Service team and manager, key expectations of the role include:

  • Providing timely and accurate comprehensive admission assessments, crisis intervention, trauma- informed treatment planning, medication management, pathology collection, education and health promotion, sexual health screening, brief intervention, support, discharge co-ordination, and community linkages to ensure continuity of healthcare upon the exit of a young person from Secure Care into the community setting.
  • Nurturing and growing cross-departmental collaboration between the YSAS primary health service, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing staff (DFFH) in Secure Care Services, Child Protection, and other key stakeholders of young people entering Secure Care.
  • Participating in a seven-day rotating roster shared evenly amongst the nursing team (no night shifts required), with participation in the after-hours on-call roster at the discretion of the Registered Nurse and the Manager, Secure Care.
  • Primarily based across the two Secure Care Units (Ascot Vale and Maribyrnong), in exceptional circumstances (such as occasional critical staffing needs) this role may also involve short-term deployment to alternate nearby YSAS locations.

This position is autonomous at times, is located within a secure environment and works particularly closely with YSAS General Practitioners and YSAS AOD Practitioners, together with community Department of Families, Fairness and Housing staff (DFFH) in Secure Care Services.

Some of your key selection criteria will be:

  1. Excellent clinical assessment skills, sound knowledge of triage and recognition of specific deterioration of the young person in regards to their health or withdrawal from substances.
  2. Well organised, and able to be flexible in managing competing priorities and deadlines
  3. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as highly developed interpersonal, coaching, and consultative skills
  4. Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills and ability to deliver innovative solutions
  5. Good judgment, able to educate others and seen as a credible source of advice
  6. Knowledge of AOD and the effect of substances.
