ABOUT THE YOUNG WORKERS CENTRE

The Young Workers Centre (YWC) is a one-stop-shop and accredited community legal centre for Victorian workers aged 30 and under who want to learn more about their rights at work, who need assistance in resolving workplace issues or want to campaign for safe and fair jobs.

We are seeking to employ a full-time Director.

Since establishment in 2016 the Young Workers Centre has delivered workplace rights training to over 61,000 young people, recovered more than $2.8 million in compensation for young workers and are proud to have supported young workers to campaign and win wage theft laws and an Apprenticeships Taskforce.

The Young Workers Centre is part of Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC), the peak body for unions in Victoria. It provides industrial support for affiliated unions and runs campaigns to promote the interests of Victorian workers.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Management of the outreach team
  • Daily oversight of outreach in schools and TAFEs
  • Campaign planning, execution and activist engagement
  • Oversight and delivery of programs, such as Union Summer/Winter – the union movement’s paid internship program
  • Participation in weekly practice management group meetings and supporting young workers to organise their workplaces
  • Media spokesperson for Young Workers Centre
  • Management of government and other stakeholder relations including departments, sponsors and youth organisations in conjunction with VTHC leadership.
  • Responsibility for KPI delivery and reporting on numerous funding agreements
  • Liaison with the YWC Inc Committee of Management, including participation in committee meetings and reporting to the committee
  • Management of funding contracts, invoicing and financial oversight

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and trade union principles
  • Proven ability managing and training a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to build rapport with a range of people – from activists to teachers to government stakeholders and the media
  • Ability to set priorities when faced with competing demands
  • Ability to devise strategy and respond swiftly to changing circumstances
  • Well-developed organisational and administrative skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting young workers

MORE INFORMATION

This is a full-time position set at Level 8 or 9 (approx. $113,000 – $124,000) of our classification structure, dependent on experience.

Victorian Trades Hall has an Enterprise Agreement with a monthly RDO (in recognition of occasional additional hours) and 12% superannuation.

This position will be based at Victorian Trades Hall in Carlton and will report to the Secretary through the Assistant Secretary.

Some irregular hours, regional and interstate travel will be required in this role.
