The Y Canberra is Safeguarding accredited by the Australian Childhood Foundation and also meets the Safeguarding licensing standards of Y National covering areas such as recruitment, training, interactions between staff and participants, policy and procedures and building a Safeguarding culture.

ABOUT THE POSITION

To further strengthen our governance in children services, we are seeking to appoint a new Board Director. The person we are seeking will contribute actively to a full range of Board governance matters and will bring specific expertise in the area of children's services, licencing standards and governance. The successful applicant will also be a member of the Board’s Governance and Nominations Committee.

Our Board meets regularly throughout the year with a requirement of 80% attendance with a minimum of 5 hours per month contribution. This position is not remunerated.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Preparing for, attending and actively contributing to Board and Committee meeting discussions; and
  • Offering expert advice to the Board and Committee on children's services governance matters.

Requirements:

  • Experience in, or a well-developed understanding of, board governance and risk functions;
  • Experience in a similar board capacity or in providing senior children's services governance oversight within a medium to large children service organisation/s;
  • A deep understanding of governance frameworks, risk management strategies and safeguarding practices, including those specifically focused on the provision of safe, high quality and effective children’s programs;
  • An understanding of the not for profit sector is desirable; and
  • Relevant qualifications.

The YMCA Board of Directors are committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people in accordance with our Safeguarding Children and Young People framework. YMCA requires that all applicants undergo satisfactory screening prior to commencement, including but not limited to:

  • A national criminal history check;
  • An international criminal history check where applicants have worked overseas;
  • Holding or obtaining a Working with Vulnerable People Check;
  • Bankruptcy and disqualified director checks- AISC; and
  • At least two reference checks.

Any successfully appointed Director will be required to adhere to the Safeguarding Children and Young People framework. This includes consent to act as a director, safeguarding children and young people training, human rights commission training, mandatory reporting & reportable conduct training.
