About the Eminent Scientists Group (ESG)

WWF-Australia's Eminent Scientists Group consists of some of Australia's most eminent scientists and practitioners who volunteer to provide expert advice in areas of WWF-Australia's priority conservation programs.

ESG members serve a three-year term with the consideration of additional terms at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
Members are appointed by the Board of Directors with experience across key areas of the conservation strategy.

The ESG meets formally, twice a year with additional meetings convened and advice sought out of session, as required. Meetings are conducted virtually with preference for one face to face meeting per year.

About the Role

The Eminent Scientists Group provides pro-bono advice and support to the Board of Directors and to WWF-Australia staff to enable it to operate effectively as a science-based, solutions focused organisation. The group provides guidance on the strategic direction of priority programs, cross-cutting themes, and emerging issues in conservation.

WWF-Australia is seeking 2-3 established scientists or traditional knowledge holders to volunteer to join the Eminent Scientists Group with experience in one or more of the following areas:

Traditional Knowledge

Perspectives across one or more of the following areas:

  • Community-led Regeneration (Caring for Country) and/or Natural Resource Management (across Country, Water and Sky)
  • Social equity
  • Threatened Species Recovery
  • Water Science
  • Climate Science
  • Other expertise that could advance the mission of WWF

Social Science

Perspective across one or more of:

  • Conservation Psychology
  • Behaviour Change
  • Science Communication
  • Social impact reporting

Regenerative Agriculture

Perspective across one or more of the below food commodities/areas:

  • Beef
  • Blue foods/Seafood
  • Sugar
  • Food innovations
  • Alternative Proteins
  • Food Security
  • Carbon sequestration
  • Deforestation and Conversion free beef

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Doctorate or equivalent practical experience
  • Demonstrated and proven engagement with Traditional Owners or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Demonstrated expertise in a priority field (as summarised above) as demonstrated by relevant publications, positions held and/or experience
  • Demonstrated leadership in respective field of expertise that would be accepted by governments, industries and community organisations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of global trends and/or global best-case practice, or experience working in an international context in the above fields.
  • Capacity to contribute pro-bono advice to an environment NGO anticipated to be ~5 days per year (2 formal meetings/year plus out of session advice and/or additional meetings as required)
