About the Role

The position supports the Chief Legal Counsel, and provides legal guidance to WWF-Australia, ensuring that WWF-Australia staff and contractors are complying with government regulations, and WWF global and local policies. The position prepares and reviews legal documents and policies, provides legal guidance and professional advice and undertakes legal investigations and risk assessments.

Key Accountabilities (refer to the PD for the full list)

  • Provides legal and compliance advice to all WWF-Australia staff to ensure awareness of and compliance with relevant regulations, industrial standards and WWF global and local policies.
  • Undertakes and participates in legal investigations, risk assessments, interviews, research and recommends appropriate legal action.
  • Prepares, negotiates, facilitates and reviews WWF-Australia commercial contracts and other legal documents.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments (including leading the compliance assurance review) to identify potential legal and compliance vulnerability, gap and risk, and on advice from the WWF-Australia Executive Team, works either independently or with key accountability holders and stakeholders to eliminate or mitigate the risk and implement improvements.
  • Periodically reviews, harmonises and updates WWF-Australia policies (and implements new policies following the Executive team's instruction) to ensure alignment with the latest regulatory requirements and the best practice standards.
  • Provides professional legal advice in relation to functional areas including but not limited to impact investing, commercial law, company law, anti-fraud and corruption, child protection, anti-Modern Slavery, privacy, data protection, intellectual property and electoral law.
  • Prepares and presents regular reports, robust updates and professional recommendations to the Executive Team on compliance-related matters and provides compliance assurance to the Executive Team.
  • Acts as the independent guardian (from both legal and compliance perspectives) to influence, persuade and ensure WWF-Australia partners and suppliers comply with legal and compliance requirements locally and globally.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated skills and experience in providing high quality legal advice and assuring compliance in corporate and/or not for profit organisations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reporting procedures and excellent record keeping and organisation skills.
  • Experience in working within complex multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to balance legal and compliance advice with commercial drivers and other contextual factors.
  • Demonstrated track-record and willingness to be 'hands on' and work across a range of tasks with varying levels of complexity.
  • Results-driven and a proven ability to work constructively across all levels of the organisation to achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrated well-developed negotiation, influencing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously, and in a diverse flexible team-based global environment.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting internal investigations
  • Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing and updating organisational policies
