About the role

The Indigenous Land Management Specialist identifies, develops and project manages WWF-Australia's partnerships with Indigenous land managers and cultural fire practitioners and supports WWF-Australia's broader engagement with Traditional Owner and Indigenous ranger groups.

A key part of the role is to collaborate with WWF-Australia scientists and experts to combine Western science with Indigenous knowledge of Country, particularly in relation to traditional land management and cultural burning practices to facilitate improved environmental and community outcomes at the landscape level.

  • Works with the Senior Manager Indigenous Engagement and Women Rangers Environment Network Coordinator to develop and implement strategies enhancing the capacity of WWF-Australia to understand and support traditional land management practices.
  • Builds networks, ensures the long-term stewardship of relationships and facilitates partnerships between Indigenous organisations, government agencies, non-government organisations, donors and private businesses to support Indigenous-led cultural and natural resource management.
  • Assists in attracting resources and expertise to support Indigenous land management including cultural fire.
  • Designs, develops, proposes, implements, monitors and evaluates a suite of conservation and land management related projects and grants programs designed to deliver social, cultural and environmental benefits.
  • Builds trust and social capital with Indigenous organisations and communities in south-east of the country (e.g. QLD, NSW, ACT and VIC), particularly in forested landscapes, with a focus on supporting Indigenous capacity and voices in traditional land management.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • On-ground, practical experience with Indigenous land management and/or related cultural and natural resource management practice.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of, and experience in identifying, developing, coordinating and implementing projects in partnership with Indigenous stakeholders and Traditional Owners.
  • Project management skills and experience, including development of work plans and budgets.
  • Experience weaving traditional knowledge and western science relating to land and sea ranger development, Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural heritage and/or sustainable development practices.
  • Well developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to contribute ideas for digital communications to support donor journeys.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, in a team and with a range of diverse stakeholders, often in remote settings.
  • Demonstrated workplace health and safety experience within a field work context.
  • Administrative, reporting, monitoring & impact assessment skills including skills in MS Office.
