Manager - Disaster Management & Contracts

The position

Join our team to lead and manage disaster response and resilience projects, ensuring impactful support for communities in crisis. As a key leader, you'll oversee a team of Program Managers, contribute to financial and technical disaster efforts, and support fundraising and public awareness initiatives. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive our mission forward.

Your role plays an integral part in the organisation, tackling global issues and supporting our mission to empower Australians to create meaningful change for the world’s most vulnerable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advisory for the team in areas such as Emergency Food and Livelihoods, Child Protection, MHPSS, WASH, and Nutrition.
  • Assist in the operational management of the WVA Surge Roster, contributing to training and deployment strategies.
  • Act as the relationship focal point for WVA with WVI partnerships and external peak bodies.
  • Lead or support WVA’s Emergency Activation Processes during significant humanitarian disasters and rapid onset emergencies.
  • Contribute to acquisition processes during emergency activations, collaborating with acquisition and technical staff.
  • Participate strategically and operationally as a member of the Disaster Management Senior Leadership team.
  • Foster a positive team culture and performance aligned with WVA workplace values and set and monitor annual team objectives aligned with WVA strategy.
  • Oversee WVA Crisis Response operations within the team’s portfolio,
  • Ensure timely engagement and compliance with contractual obligations within the team’s contracts portfolio
  • Provide thought leadership on Humanitarian and Disaster Management technical areas to enhance program outcomes and brand awareness.

Who we’re looking for 

As the successful applicant, you will have a breadth of capabilities including the ability to see opportunities where others see obstacles and demonstrate a can-do attitude, creativity and a focus on solutions.

You will have:

  • Understand and adherence to Humanitarian Principles, Red Cross Red Crescent Code of Conduct and other international Standards in Humanitarian operations
  • Experience in managing humanitarian and/or resilience operations
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, disaster management cycle and the project cycle.
  • Understanding of humanitarian coordination mechanisms and the international humanitarian system and organisations
  • Knowledge of financial and compliance management related to the international development sector in Australia
  • Bachelor degree in International Development or Humanitarian relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated expertise in a technical field related to Disaster Management, notably: Emergency Food and Livelihoods, Child Protection and MHPSS, WASH and nutrition (desirable)
  • Understanding emerging models of partnering between NGOs and government/ international organisations (desirable) and knowledge of humanitarian donor landscape (desirable)
