Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is an Aboriginal community initiative as Victoria’s only registered Independent Aboriginal School. A full boarding school, Worawa caters for Aboriginal girls in the secondary years of schooling, Years 7-12. Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. Students come from Aboriginal communities across the country.
The Worawa curriculum strongly emphasises foundation studies in literacy and numeracy while providing a breadth and depth of learning experiences across all key disciplines/learning areas. The Gananggurr pedagogy model is based on the Aboriginal values of Relationship, Responsibility, Respect and Rigour that inform all aspects of College operations. Along with the core academic program, emphasis is placed on nurturing and celebrating Aboriginal culture as a crucial aspect of student self-esteem and wellbeing.
Reporting to the Head of Teaching and Learning, the primary role of the Secondary Mathematics and STEM Teacher is to prepare and deliver engaging learning activities that enable students to grasp key mathematical and STEM concepts. The focus will be on enhancing students' mathematical literacy, problem-solving skills, and academic achievement, while fostering a strong understanding of STEM disciplines. The teacher will encourage critical thinking, innovation, and the real-world application of mathematical and STEM knowledge, equipping students with essential skills for future success.
This role will prioritise the development of positive relationships with all those involved in the student’s learning, and work as part of the academic team to deliver relevant and culturally appropriate curriculum in the ACARA and VCE VM learning areas of Mathematics and STEM.
This position requires the incumbent to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination.
