About Us

For over 40 years Women’s Legal Service Victoria (Women’s Legal) has championed women’s rights to live free from violence. We are a dedicated team with a passion for working with women and non-binary people to live free from violence and discrimination by:

  • Providing high quality integrated legal services for Victorian women and non-binary people who are victim-survivors of family violence and disadvantaged or marginalised by structural and systemic barriers.
  • Building the capacity of professionals who work with women and non-binary people, to better understand the law and navigate the legal system safely.
  • Advancing gender equality by challenging unsafe and discriminatory policies and laws and informing and advocating for legal and policy initiatives that respect and promote the rights of women and non-binary people.

About the Role

Supported by the Intake and Paralegal Team Leader and on call lawyers, our new team of Intake and Assessment Workers will serve as the initial point of contact for Women’s Legal.

Intake and Assessment Workers will conduct comprehensive intake assessments against our eligibility criteria and triage and book client appointments. Where help seekers are not eligible for our service, the Intake and Assessment Worker will provide accurate legal information and facilitate appropriate referrals to legal and support services.

Key responsibilities are:

  • Manage incoming client inquiries via phone, email, and in-person visits.
  • Perform detailed intake assessments to identify legal issues.
  • Connect clients with appropriate legal information and services, support. organisations, and community resources.
  • Schedule appointments and manage client records, including booking interpreters for appointments and calls.
  • Process referrals for our duty lawyer services.

About You

You are a compassionate and organised professional with strong communication skills and a trauma informed approach. You build trust quickly, work in a fast-paced team and are committed to supporting women and non-binary people experiencing legal challenges.
Key to your success is your:

  • Ability to use trauma-informed practices to gather sensitive information from clients;
  • Ability to identify clients with high-risk issues such as safety and suicide; and
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

You will:

  • Have experience gathering sensitive information from clients and using this information to make judgements about eligibility, preferably within a legal or community services setting; and
  • Be proficient in using client management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

Applicants with tertiary qualifications in a related field such as law, social work or community services and those with experience working in a community legal centres are strongly encouraged to apply.
