Work closely with landowners, rangers, and coordinators from Kabulwarnamyo, Manmoyi and Mamadawerre to support our highly successful fire management program, including aerial prescribed burning and wildfire suppression.
Warddeken Land Management operates three remote ranger bases to assist Nawarddeken to care for the 14,000 square kilometres of the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) of west Arnhem Land. The Warddeken IPA covers rugged sandstone escarpments, savanna woodland and lowlands and includes some of the Northern Territory’s most biodiverse environments. This spectacular region is exceptional in both its natural and cultural values and working in this extraordinary part of the world is a unique, challenging and rewarding experience.
Every year Warddeken Rangers conduct strategic prescribed burning in the early dry season and actively suppress wildfires in the late dry season. As part of the Western Arnhem Land Fire Abatement project, our fire management program generates carbon credits, the sales of which are reinvested in land management operations, biodiversity monitoring and social programs.
The Seasonal Fire Officer will support Warddeken ranger teams to deliver all aspects of the program and gain practical on-ground experience in savanna fire management.
Wildfire suppression in Arnhem Land is extremely difficult and rewards the adventurous. Our ideal candidate has experience with remote area firefighting, a high level of personal fitness, is highly practical and committed to working alongside Indigenous people.
This position will involve a significant amount of travel and camping throughout the remote Warddeken IPA and will require the successful applicant to spend considerable time in a helicopter.
A position description is attached.
