What we do

The Women’s Housing Company (WHC) Limited is a registered charity and Tier 1 Community Housing Provider managing over 1200 properties providing housing, accommodation and support services for women and children across Sydney, the Hunter and Coffs Harbour.

At WHC we provide housing and homelessness services to single women and women with children in NSW.

Last year, we housed almost 1,700 women and children, as well as supported over 300 homeless women. We have a particular focus on addressing the housing needs of older women, women with children, and women who have experienced domestic and family violence.

Location: Surry Hills and Western Sydney (travel to both locations is required)

Role Purpose

The Income Recovery Officer is responsible for providing exceptional customer service through a trauma informed approach in supporting tenants to sustain their social housing tenancy by maintaining their rent repayments and managing any rent or non-rental arrears.

This position plays a key role in providing quality housing services and support to women, working proactively to intervene early to monitor, maintain and address rent arrears and assist tenants to link them with relevant services that support them to manage their debts, finances and payments.

The position is required to work as part of a team in improving outcomes for tenants. The Income Recovery Officer monitors and maintains rental and non-rental arrears consistent with the relevant legislative and contractual requirements and within the guidelines of the Women’s Housing Company (WHC) policies and procedures.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the WHC to meet its financial goals and KPI targets through the effective management of rent and non-rent arrears, including former tenant debt
  • Engage and support tenants to effectively maintain and sustain their tenancies
  • Weekly monitoring and follow up of all rent and non-rent arrears, and former tenant debt and oversight and management of tenant credit.
  • Management of rent related information and processes
  • Monitoring and reporting of tenant arrears and former tenant debt
  • Supporting the Rent Review Officer with rent review activities on an as needs basis when availability allows
  • Maintain high levels of customer satisfaction by ensuring the timely response to tenant enquiries, complaints and grievances
  • Support the Tenancy Services team to meet its compliance and legislative obligations by ensuring the timely and accurate recording of tenant information in the IT system(s) and maintaining strict adherence to operational and workplace policies and procedures.

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge

  • Certificate IV in Social Housing, or equivalent
  • Experience in working with vulnerable people experiencing homelessness, rough sleepers, people experiencing domestic and family violence and mental health issues
  • Experience in a finance, collections, or tenancy management role in the community housing sector
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to negotiate successful outcomes
  • Thorough knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act
  • Understanding of social support service system
  • Experience at NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT)
  • Intermediate skills in all Microsoft Office 2010 applications
  • Good written and verbal communication skills including interpersonal skills and the ability to negotiate
  • NSW Driver’s license
  • Willing to obtain both a National Criminal History Check, and a Working with Children’s Check
