Wildlife Health Australia (WHA) is the coordinating body for wildlife health in Australia, and initially began as a national initiative of the Australian Government in 2002 [1]. WHA operates a virtual office and offers the flexibility of remote working arrangements.

WHA works with a network of government and private stakeholders across Australia to develop strong partnerships in order to better manage the adverse effects of wildlife diseases on Australia’s animal health industries, human health, biodiversity, trade and tourism. WHA participates in surveillance, investigation, monitoring, research and recording of wildlife disease events. WHA helps protect Australia’s trade, human health, biodiversity and tourism.

WHA is seeking a motivated Senior Project Officer to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis (38 hours per week). We are looking for someone excited to be part of our surveillance program with an interest in wildlife health. Key to this role are outstanding communication skills, experience in managing projects and attention to detail, and the ability to work with a diverse stakeholder network. This role will include managing WHA’s national wild bird surveillance program, so knowledge of and/or experience working on a targeted wildlife disease surveillance program, avian influenza and other avian diseases is an advantage.

An ideal candidate will possess the following, specific to the Senior Project Officer role:

• High level knowledge and interest in wildlife health, disease surveillance and management.
• High level skills in project management and an understanding of complex stakeholder engagement.
• Understanding of animal disease surveillance and management including wildlife diseases.
• Understanding of government processes and functions relating to animal health issues.
• High level experience in and commitment to accurate record keeping, fact finding, data collection, analysis and interpretation.
• Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications.
• Demonstrated excellence in computer skills including experience with database management, including managing of large data sets.
• Demonstrated administrative skills, including committee chairperson duties and support.
• Experience in building and maintaining genuine, respectful working relationships and collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications & Licences

• A degree in an appropriate discipline such as veterinary science, animal health, biological sciences or environmental health.
• For a veterinary science degree: desirable, but not mandatory that is registrable in one of Australia’s states or territories.

Salary for this position is $108,749 p/a plus 11% superannuation.
