We are a seeking an experienced Community Development Worker to join our supportive, close-knit team here at Wellways Australia. Location for this exciting position is flexible and can be based from either Wagga Wagga or Griffith NSW.

About our Suicide Prevention Program

Wellways has a number of programs providing services within the Murrumbidgee consisting Mental Health Rehabilitation & Recovery Services, Suicide Prevention, grass roots education and training in mental health and a range of Peer Facilitated Education Programs.

Our suite of Suicide Prevention Programs includes, The Way Back Support Service, After Suicide Support Program and the Gatekeeper Initiative. All of these programs aim to support those who experience suicidality, are bereaved by suicide and the community to build their understanding, skills and knowledge to support people in suicidal distress.

About Your Next Opportunity!

Working in the role of Community Development Worker, your primary focus will be to increase community understanding and knowledge of Wellways, our recovery model, anti-stigma and suicide prevention campaigns and services, providing mental health and suicide prevention education activities around the Murrumbidgee Region. Raising awareness for mental health, stigma reduction and suicide prevention activities among key members of local communities and stakeholders including GPs, health providers, workplaces and business plays a critical part in this position.

In addition, providing stigma reduction and suicide prevention skills and training to members of local communities or community 'gatekeepers', who may come into contact with people in mental distress also pays a key part in the role of Community Development Worker.

Crucial Skills & Experiences you will need to be successful in this job!

  • Experience in community/community development context
  • Demonstrated prior experience in developing important community and stakeholder relationships with a focus on mental health and/or suicide prevention
  • Comprehensive knowledge of personal, family, and social groups associated with suicidal ideation and attempts, including with groups identified to be at increased risk of suicide or experiencing a suicidal crisis
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence in facilitation and presenting of suicide prevention and mental health information
  • Understanding of suicide prevention approaches in a community context

Pre-employment requirements

  • Relevant qualifications, or commensurate experience, alongside people who have experienced suicidality or bereavement generally a Certificate IV qualification minimum
  • Qualifications or extensive experience in Community Development and/or Suicide Prevention
  • Current valid Driver's License and the ability to undertake travel for the role
  • Appropriate IT skills, including sound knowledge of, and experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Working with Children's Check
  • Right to Work within Australia
  • Satisfactory Police Records Check (no older than 12 months)
  • NDIS Workers Screening Check
  • COVID19 Vaccination Certificate or valid medical exemption
