Wallumatta Legal

About us

Wallumatta Legal is a low fee, not-for-profit family law firm. We are a social justice project that aims to offer affordable legal advice and representation to the “missing middle” (that is, low to middle income earners).

We are an innovate legal practice where the focus is on client outcomes, producing work of the highest standard, and an excellent team culture.

Founded in 2021, we are now operating a full-service family law firm with eight lawyers across Victoria and New South Wales and are looking for an experienced family lawyer to join our growing practice in Victoria - it is an exciting time to come on board!

About the role

The role is full-time (permanent), based at Melbourne Law School, and we offer flexible work arrangements and operate on a hybrid model.

If you have at least four years’ experience in family law, a pragmatic approach, and share our belief that everyone deserves access to justice - regardless of their financial position, background, or any other factor - then Wallumatta Legal might be the firm for you.

You will work closely with the Senior Solicitor as we gradually expand our Melbourne-based team (currently three solicitors and a legal assistant) and will also receive support from the broader team in Sydney. There will also be the opportunity to supervise MLS Juris Doctor students undertaking placement with us.

You will get to demonstrate your family law skills and experience by:

  • providing advice and representation to clients in parenting and property matters;
  • drafting legal documents including correspondence and court documents;
  • appearing at the FCFCOA; and
  • appearing at mediation and settlement conferences.

You will be part of a team that prides itself on providing not only high-quality advice across a wide spectrum of family law matters, but also development and training opportunities, and career progression.

About you

To be considered for this role you will need to have:

  • a minimum of four years post admission experience.
  • experience in providing advice and representing clients across a broad range of family law issues (including property and parenting matters).
  • experience in attending court and briefing Counsel.
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • well-developed organisation and time management skills.
  • strong attention to detail.
  • a desire to broaden your network.
  • the ability to work both within a team and autonomously, and
  • the desire to make a positive impact.

In return you will have the opportunity to be part of establishing this exciting and innovative practice in Victoria and become a member a dynamic and genuinely supportive national team.

Why join us?

At Wallumatta Legal, you’ll be joining a dynamic and supportive team that is genuinely dedicated to providing access to justice for all. In return for your expertise and commitment, you’ll have the chance to help shape the future of the firm as we grow in Victoria. You’ll also have access to ongoing professional development and career progression opportunities, as well as the chance to work in a hybrid model that supports your work-life balance.

This is a unique opportunity to work for a firm that combines a strong social justice ethos with a commercial approach to delivering legal services. If you share our values and are ready to take the next step in your career, we would love to hear from you.
