Voiceworks is a community show choir that welcomes everyone. We stage public performances every year and, as a show choir, we do more than make beautiful music. We also include costume, lighting, simple choreography and humour to make sure that our performances are great entertainment.
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Musical Theatre Show Director to lead and oversee the creative and practical aspects of our musical productions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in musical theatre, and the ability to work collaboratively to develop innovative show concepts and bring them to life through engaging performances.
THIS ROLE INVOLVES:
- Creative Vision: Collaborate with the Musical Director to develop the creative concept and select the musical repertoire for each musical production.
- Production Design: Create the script, staging and lighting design, choreography and costumes for the production which link the musical numbers into a coherent and engaging story.
- Casting: Conduct auditions to select choir members for performance roles and recruit musical professionals for guest performer roles.
- Rehearsals: Work with the Musical Director to conduct show rehearsals, providing direction and feedback to assist performers to refine their performances. Conduct technical rehearsals for sound and lighting, props and stage management.
- Production Management: Collaborate with the Choir Director to develop and manage production budgets, schedules, and logistics.
- Performance Oversight: Oversee all aspects of the live performances, making adjustments as needed to ensure a high-quality show.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Experience in both directing and performing, particularly in musical theatre.
- Strong creative ability to develop simple show scripts and bring them to life in an engaging way.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey ideas and feedback.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other roles including Choir Director, Musical Director, and sound and lighting technicians.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address any issues that arise during rehearsals or performances.
- Ability to inspire and guide a diverse group of choir members.
- Strong organisational and time management skills to manage rehearsals, schedules, and production logistics.
- Understanding of stagecraft, lighting, sound, and other technical aspects of theatre production.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Formal qualifications in Theatre Arts, Performing Arts, or a related field.
- Keen eye for detail to ensure all aspects of the production are polished and cohesive.
