About Us

Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC) is Victoria’s peak body for people who have a lived experience of mental health or emotional challenges. VMIAC is run by consumers, for consumers. VMIAC’s vision is a world where all mental health consumers stand proud, live a life with choices honoured, rights upheld, and these principles are embedded in all aspects of society.

VMIAC undertake individual, group and systemic advocacy and their work includes research and evaluation, education and training, information provision and resource development, as well as limited specialist support programs. VMIAC have a strong and continuous focus on engagement with members and informing and supporting them in becoming empowered and having their voices heard.

VMIAC is an Incorporated Association and is governed by a Committee of Management (COM).

Position overview

The Senior Project Lead is a fixed term role that will provide leadership for a key VMIAC strategic and organisation development project made possible by funding growth and self-investment.

The project has been initiated through the Committee of Management as part of ensuring VMIAC is an exemplar lived experience organisation and is well positioned to support consumer leadership in the process of system reform in Victoria. The Committee will establish a Task Group to support this project.

The Senior Project Lead will

  • Report and be directed through the Chair in consultation with the CEO
  • Receive line management and support through the CEO
  • Actively engage with the Organisational Development Task Group of the CoM
  • Provide support, direction and mentoring to the admin support officer allocated to the project.

THIS IS A LIVED EXPERIENCE, CONSUMER POSITION:

Applicants must be people with lived experience of mental health challenges, trauma or emotional distress and/or who have accessed mental health or other related services specifically to support their mental wellbeing.

Applicants must consider themselves to be work ready; be capable of reflecting on how their own lived experience interacts with that of others; and be able of contributing to the development and implementation of collaborative ways of working.

Key Objectives

The project is This is how we do it (the Project), an organisational development project that aims to:

  • Create a safe, creative and productive lived experience organisation in which our lived experience consumer workforce thrives
  • Evolve a responsible governance model best suited to a lived experience (advocacy) organisation and peak consumer body
  • Strengthen lived experience consumer leadership within VMIAC and through our register and other efforts
  • Document and share the lessons we learn through a conscious focus on the intersection between lived
    experience and organisation design and development.

Key Selection Criteria (this needs to be addressed in the application)

Essential:

  • Knowledge of the consumer movement and rights based approaches
  • Experience in organisational development and change
  • Demonstrated track record in complex project management
  • Strong planning and organising skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working with consumers and from a consumer perspective
  • Strong communication skills, excellent writing skills
  • History of partnership making and alliance building
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to inspire and support collaboration and team work
  • Sound knowledge of co-design and co-production principles

Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualifications relevant to the role
  • Knowledge of state and national mental health landscapes
  • Understanding of a lived experience organisation
  • Experience in the design and delivery if training initiatives
  • Experience working in a paid consumer leadership role within the mental health sector.

Remuneration and contract period

  • This a fixed term contract (15 months)
  • $130,000 pro rata at 0.6 FTE plus super, access to salary packaging

Checks and probationary period

  • The preferred candidate for the role is required to complete and/or provide Police and Working with Children checks prior to final confirmation and commencement of employment
  • Referees are required and will be contacted for shortlisted applicants.
  • This role is subject to a probationary period of three months

Equipment:

  • VMIAC has a small pool of work vehicles which are accessible by all staff via a prioritising booking system for use for work purposes if/when required. This does not include the use of VMIAC vehicles to travel to and from staff’s homes to VMIAC.
