Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC) is Victoria’s peak body for people who have a lived experience of mental health or emotional challenges. VMIAC is run by consumers, for consumers. VMIAC’s vision is a world where all mental health consumers stand proud, live a life with choices honoured, rights upheld, and these principles are embedded in all aspects of society.

VMIAC undertake individual, group and systemic advocacy and their work includes research and evaluation, education and training, information provision and resource development, as well as limited specialist support programs. POSITION OVERVIEW

This role is to oversee a project funded by the Department of Health to inform consumers about the new Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 (Vic) (‘the Act’).

This project will target mental health consumers from diverse populations and co-produce targeted resources with an advisory group developed in partnership with community stakeholders. This position will also work with legal services to create information resources that are technically accurate and co-facilitate a series of outreach education sessions (using these resources) so people can expand their understanding of their rights under the Act and link up with legal support who can support them.

Key Objectives

The purpose of this position is to oversee the planning, design and delivery of a resources development project with the goal to:

  • increase consumer knowledge and awareness of the changes to the Mental Health & Wellbeing Act 2022 coming into effect in September 2023
  • support consumers to self-advocate for their rights under the Act

Key Selection Criteria

Applicants, please respond to the criteria below.

  • Proven project management and implementation skills including an ability to set and work to project deadlines.
  • Experience overseeing the co-production of resources producing written, video content & online material for a range of audiences including those with accessibility needs.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting internal stakeholder (across teams) & external community sector stakeholders.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of Victorian mental health policy & relevant legislation.
  • Strong written communication and public presentation/facilitation skills
  • Confidence working and consulting with diverse communities, particularly LGBTIQA+, people of refugee backgrounds, people with a disability and First Nations peoples.
  • A lived experience of mental health challenges, trauma or emotional distress
  • Current Police Check and Working with Children Check

  • Preferred candidates are required to complete and/or provide Police and Working with Children checks prior to final confirmation and commencement of employment

  • This role is subject to a probationary period of three months.
