ABOUT US

Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC) is Victoria’s peak body for people who have a lived experience of mental health or emotional challenges. VMIAC is run by consumers, for consumers. VMIAC’s vision is a world where all mental health consumers stand proud, live a life with choices honoured, rights upheld, and these principles are embedded in all aspects of society.

VMIAC undertake individual, group and systemic advocacy and their work includes research and evaluation, education and training, information provision and resource development, as well as limited specialist support programs. VMIAC have a strong and continuous focus on engagement with members and informing and supporting them in becoming empowered and having their voices heard.

Position overview

VMIAC is looking for a consultant to assist us to review and update all of our policies and procedures. This will be a up to six-months position commencing as soon as possible, based on 3 days per week.

Policies and procedures are an essential part of any organisation as they provide a roadmap for day-to-day operations. They ensure compliance with laws and regulations, give guidance for decision-making and streamline internal processes. At VMIAC we have developed a wide range of policies and procedures and need to ensure that they are still relevant given the current environment in which we are operating.

In the past three years VMIAC has moved from being a small advocacy organisation to one with a major role in the transformation of the mental health system in Victoria. Our polices need to reflect this role and our procedures need to assist us to be consistent and effectively organised.

The task will require answering the following questions:

  • Is this policy well expressed and in good English?
  • Is this policy or procedure still valid?
  • Is this policy or procedure being followed properly and if not how can this be addressed?
  • Does it help satisfy VMIAC's legal and compliance standards?
  • Is this policy well aligned with VMIAC’s mission and values?
  • Are there policies and procedures that are missing?
  • How can we ensure that the policies and procedures are accessible and understood?

Essential Selection Criteria

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

The person will required include:

  • Knowledge of the Mental Health system in Victoria
  • Understanding of the role of VMIAC
  • Understanding of the National Standards for Disability Services and Accreditation process
  • Experience in developing policies and procedures
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills
