HEP 9 $111,591-$116,101 per annum plus 9.5% employer superannuation contribution. This is a full time (36.75 hours per week) Maternity Cover for 8 months with the possibility of extension.

About the Role

The Media and Communications Manager works to build the Mitchell Institute’s public profile (both in education and health policy) by delivering an integrated and innovative media, communications and content strategy across internal and external channels (including news outlets, website and social media platforms). This role also supports VU researchers whose work crosses over with Mitchell Institute focus areas. This is an exciting and varied role with opportunities to secure widespread national media stories that support advocacy efforts to deliver policy improvements at the state and federal level. This role is crucial in managing relationships with University senior leaders, external partners and contributing to strategic planning for the media team, as well as for the wider Media and Corporate Communications portfolio. Reporting to the Director, Media and Corporate Communications.

About the Person

Five years or more in media and public relations management, leading high profile media campaigns, with additional years’ experience in journalism and / or communications. Experience in delivering social media campaigns, web-based content and opinion pieces. You are self-motivated and enjoy working as part of a team developing strategic media campaigns, news and opinion pieces and placing them in state and national media. You will have experience negotiating content and priorities with senior internal and external stakeholders. You will be highly motivated, have excellent verbal, written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to negotiate, influence and problem solve. A journalism and / or public relations / communications degree is required or equivalent experience. Experience in policy, advocacy and / or research-based media communications is an advantage. 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Here is a snapshot of what you’ll be doing day to day:

  • Planning, delivering and leading proactive media, communications and content activities
  • Responding to reactive media inquiries
  • Producing timely content for a variety of channels including news and opinion outlets and website and social media platforms
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the media
  • Developing strategic media communication plans for the Mitchell Institute and contributing to the VU media team’s strategic direction and planning.
