Victoria Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is seeking a passionate and community-connected Client Services Officer (CSO) to join our Criminal Law Practice in Warrnambool.

This is a meaningful opportunity to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients as they navigate the legal system, while working in a culturally safe, community-controlled organisation committed to justice, advocacy and self-determination.

As a CSO, you'll play a vital role in bridging the gap between clients, lawyers, courts and community services — ensuring people feel supported, informed and culturally safe throughout their legal journey.

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and the state's only specialist legal and support service dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.Since 1973, VALS has provided culturally safe legal advice, representation and wraparound support across criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice and specialist litigation. We also deliver broader support services including a 24/7 Custody Notification Service, transitional housing support, family violence programs, community legal education and client advocacy.

About the role

As the Client Support Officer, you will be the key cultural interface between Aboriginal Community members, VALS lawyers and the court system. You will provide practical, short-term intensive support that helps clients engage meaningfully in legal processes, understand their options, and access culturally appropriate services. This is a hands-on, community-facing role suited to someone who is compassionate, organised and confident building trusted relationships.
  • Support clients through family law, child protection and family violence matters
  • Attend courts and other appointments to help clients participate in legal processes
  • Undertake risk and needs assessments and provide practical casework support
  • Make warm referrals to culturally safe services and community supports
  • Liaise with courts, agencies and stakeholders to improve client outcomes
  • Maintain accurate case notes and contribute to a collaborative multidisciplinary team

What you'll be doing

In this role, you will:

  • Support clients to navigate court processes and legal appointments
  • Attend court with clients and provide practical and cultural support
  • Assess client needs, identify risks and coordinate referrals to relevant services
  • Undertake welfare checks, client transport and other community-based support activities where appropriate
  • Work collaboratively with solicitors, paralegals, community services and government agencies
  • Maintain strong local service knowledge and referral pathways
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with Aboriginal communities
  • Represent VALS at meetings, forums and community engagement activities
  • Complete case notes, reports and administrative tasks accurately and on time

What we're looking for

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • Strong connections to and experience working with Aboriginal communities
  • A sound understanding of the Victorian legal system and the barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Experience in community services, client support, casework or advocacy
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong organisation and time management skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and client management systems

Qualifications / experience

You will ideally hold a certificate, diploma or degree in community services, social work or a related field. We also welcome applicants with strong relevant experience in the community services sector and a willingness to undertake further study with support from VALS.

Mandatory requirements

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • A current Employee Working with Children Check
  • A valid Victorian Driver's Licence
  • A National Criminal History Check
  • The right to work in Australia
