VALID is an award-winning organisation at the forefront of advocating for people with a disability in Victoria since 1989. Over that time, we have developed training tools, information and resources and advocated to empower people with a disability and their families.

About the opportunity

• Fixed term to 30 June 2023
• Full time or 0.6 - 0.8 FTE (negotiable)
• Work from VALID's office (Collingwood), with work-from-home negotiable and some travel required
• Access to coaching and training opportunities, regular external supervision and internal supervision with the Advocacy Manager and Senior advocate

Individual Advocacy Team

VALID’s Individual Advocacy Team provides direct individual assistance to adults with intellectual disabilities across Victoria to address abuse, neglect, homelessness, justice issues, health, and service problems using a human rights framework. Individual Advocates work with clients and their families and other supporters to achieve an advocacy goal and to enhance self advocacy skills. Advocates also work on systemic advocacy projects alongside self advocates and supporters. The team assists more than 250 clients and families per year to achieve advocacy outcomes.

Position Overview

Individual Advocates assist people to understand and exercise their rights, increase their control over their own lives, make formal complaints and take systemic action. Individual Advocates use VALID’s advocacy method to build the self advocacy skills of people with intellectual disabilities, families and others. Individual Advocates are supported within the advocacy team and collaborate closely with VALID’s other advocacy programs and projects including self advocacy forums and events. Individual Advocates take an active role in VALID’s systemic advocacy work.
